Usually I can find some redeeming quality in an anime title in order to keep watching it. If the story sucks, maybe the voice acting is great, or the visuals offer something pleasing...There is usually something. Unfortunately there is NOTHING worthwhile with Eureka 7, I don't care what you say.
I tend to enjoy damn near every mecha anime I've ever seen. There's something about gigantic, massively detailed robots blowing shit up that makes the child in me smile. Even if the story is too difficult to follow [Neon Genesis Evangelion anyone?] the fact that there will be big ol robo battles, does my heart good. I heart Mecha Anime. But I have no love for Eureka 7. There is nothing, I mean nothing, worth wasting time on with this anime title.
First of all the title of the anime is Eureka 7 and while many anime titles have weak connections between their title and subject matter, this title actually has a character named Eureka. Well, actually her name is pronounced Air-ray-kah by everyone in the series. [Dead scientists roll over in their graves each time the word is mis-pronounced] The dialog is droll at best. There are actual moments when one of the major characters [Holland] comments to himself out loud about how cool he is. Seriously. His merry band of mecha air surfing pilots haze the new guy, and Holland watches the video of the hazing and remarks to himself, "I am sooo cool." then kicks back to watch the video. When the episode ended I physically felt my I.Q. drop a couple of points.
And no, you didn't misunderstand what I wrote earlier: the mecha in this anime use surf boards [they refer to them as wake boards in the series] to surf the air and battle stuff. While I'm several episodes into the series, there really haven't been a lot of battles. The series basically follows the path of young Renton Thurston as he tries to get Eureka to love him. Renton falls madly in love with Eureka when they first meet, and spends the rest of his snot dripping time trying to find a way to spend more time with her. There was an entire episode devoted to him just talking himself up to try and talk to Eureka.
The visuals are ok, but they aren't anything to write home about. No "better than average robot design" no interesting transforming element, nothing. And with the existing writing, there just isn't anything there. Each episode just kinda sits there for about 22 minutes, and then it's over. Then you sit there wondering why the hell you just spent 30 minutes to watch this dull, mediocre, lame anime.
I'm not asking myself this question anymore.
Now before you freak out, yes I know there's a hidden past with Renton's family and the mecha robots just like I know Renton wants to find his sister as well. But seeing as how the series thus far has only focused on those two things in the first episode, I didn't feel a need to go into them any further.
Eureka 7 is a waste of my time and of yours. Don't believe me, watch an episode. You'll see I'm not lying.

Until then, NinJasistah out--
