Japan's funniest cartoon about butlers is making his television return!

According to the "99th volume" of Hayate The Combat Butler (which is only available to those who see the butler's debut movie Heaven is a Place on Earth) a third season has been officially green-lit into production. The head editor of Hayate and Nagi's adventures Takashi Kumagai had revealed in January that the next step after the film had already been put into motion, and the manga creator Kenjiro Hata had posted (in English, surprisingly) that a third season was to start production back in April.

Hayate The Combat Butler follows a boy named Hayate who must pay off a 156 million yen debt by serving as a butler for a girl named Nagi. Viz Media has licensed the manga, and Bandai Entertainment has been distributing the first season in America. Both seasons are available to view on Crunchyroll.

This is not a straight-up cameo from Spider-man, though. Since this is a very ero book, the male protaganist has been turned into Papaider-man, who shoots his "liquid" in the most interesting (and unnecessary) of poses. That's sex comedy for you!

I won't even get into the whole premise of this series. Let's just say it's VERY awkward.

This week, Pandalicious starts off the show talking about some new anime she's been watching on Netflix which includes the short (but oh so brutal) series Rin Daughters of Mnemosyne where the lead character Rin is an immortal woman who is made to suffer some serious bodily harm, and ludicrous sexual situations. Then Ninjasistah chimes in adding the yaoi-esque Mirage of Blaze series currently streaming on Hulu which follows a weird "through-time-and-space" relationship between the main protagonist Takaya Ohgi and love sick vassel, Nobutsuna Naoe.

Then it's on to video games as the ladies discuss their reactions to playing the upcoming Warner Bros. reboot of the video game classic - Mortal Kombat.

Yes, it's S&M, man-rape and fatalities this week on the ESH Podcast...would you have it any other way?
Ohhh, now here's where I actually tell you what Gyakushu is. Gyakushu is a story of vengeance, about a bandaged man who goes about a bloody rampage, taking many wicked and soulless men down along the way. If I could compare the art style to anything, I would say the art of the Genndy Tartakovsky cartoons is somewhere in the right ballpark.

I still feel that is an unfair reference, because Gyakushu is very much its own animal. It's not just some Japanese art influenced book either. Check out the motion comic for yourself on Hulu and see if you like it. It may even get you to read the actual books.

I've been a fan of Moyashimon (or Moyasimon, depending on which company spells it) for almost three years now. I've watched the entire anime series, read the manga and even own an A. oryzae plushie. When I heard that there were plans to do a live-action version I was stoked, and then when I read that FUNimation was to stream the show soon after each episode airs I got excited. Then I watched the show. Needless to say it left a bittersweet taste in my mouth.

Moyashimon follows the life of Tadayasu (Nakamura Yuichi), a student at an agricultural college with a unique gift: he can see microbes and bacteria with a naked eye. His ability catches the ear of Professor Itsuki (Kurosawa Toshio) and his grad student partner Hasegawa (Kato Natsuki), who use Tadayasu to help in their studies. Unfortunately it also reaches the ears of Takuma (Kimura Akihito) and Misato (Nishida Kato), who use their knowledge of bacteria to try to turn a buck; and as soon as they meet Tadayasu they (forcefully) bring him into their schemes. Female students Hazuki (Haneyuri) and Aoi (Chisun) also catch wind of Tadayasu's abilities, and soon come to respect and befriend him. All goes well, until a childhood friend (Okamoto Azusa) appears...

When it comes to adapting manga or anime into live-action J-DRAMA, the same issue always arises: condensing the material to fit the show's scheduled timeline. Surprisingly Moyashimon manages to to do that well, focusing on the main aspects of the original source without having to slice off anything important. Unfortunately this leads to one of the main characters to be left out of the series until the end of the fourth episode (unlike in the manga and anime, where the character appears in the first chapter/episode). Granted it helps to keep the character hidden until then so as to not spoil the surprise (which I will not tell you, so as to make you actually watch the show), but there could've been at least a flashback or two to showcase the character in the first episode.

Each episode connects to one another, and the plotlines are well-written. I can't talk about the writing without having to mention Episode Five ("Love Potion"), which features some of the best and funniest moments on any TV series from around the globe. The reactions and outcomes to the characters after talking the aphrodisiac is too priceless for words, and can be compared easily to the most recent of Todd Phillips movies. I would be lying if I said it didn't make me laugh uncontrollably, and the added commentary from the microbes brought a strong sarcastic wit to the series.

Speaking of the microbes, props must be given to the people who had to animate them. Not only do they look fantastic, but the work to put them into the scenes is as spot-on as the most recent Hollywood blockbusters. One scene where this is done perfectly is in the first episode, where Tadayasu is brought into the now-destroyed sake containment room. When Takuma and Misato open the containers the microbes swirl around Tadayasu as he tries to brush them off. The camerawork showcases a one-shot where in one moment we see the microbes from Tadayasu's point-of-view to that of the other two students (i.e.: them being invisible). Whoever edited that one scene together should seriously be considered for a good-paying editing job for the next big Japanese action flick. Of course we can't forget about the voice acting of the microbes, which easily manages to outshine the acting of the real human actors. (Sadly, I couldn't find out who does it here, but it's strongly possible that it's the same people who voiced them in the anime.)

This, sadly, leads us to the weakest part of the live-action Moyashimon: the acting. While in the similar vein of such classic J-DRAMAs as Great Teacher Onizuka and Gokusen the acting here sometimes doesn't work. The blend of realism and laughably-bad acting got annoying in parts, especially in regards to the UFO Club in Episode 3. Whoever taught these four people how to act should be stripped of their credentials, as the UFO Club was eye-gouchingly bad. (It does lead to a funny moment involving Professor Itsuki, but they still got on my nerves.) The other characters bring forth many hit-and-miss moments, and at times they, too, got bothersome. That said sometimes these sorts of reactions manage well in Moyashimon, whereas other times they don't.

If you can get past some of the acting, however, Moyashimon can be a real treat to watch. In fact it's also quite educational, especially when the microbes come onto the screen to introduce themselves. If one were to splice these moments together they would have quite the handy educational video for microbiology classes in high school and college. Not to mention the show can be very humorous. I do advise, however, that you view only an episode at a time, as the acting probably will get to you if you marathon it.

*** (out of five)

By the way, if you don't believe the part about me owning a Moyashimon plushie, I advise you to look below.

In 1994 Hiroaki Samura introduced the world to Mugen no Jūnin, better known in America as Blade of the Immortal. It would receive critical acclaim and multiple awards, including the Will Eisner Comic Industry Award in 2000 for Best U.S. Edition of Foreign Material. Fourteen years after its debut Bee Train and Production I.G. adapted it into an anime, coming to our shores via Media Blasters.

The story follows Manji, a samurai who cannot die thanks in part to a curse. Manji’s past is filled with blood and criminal acts, and has led to the death of 100 people (one of which was his brother-in-law). Until he can murder 1000 evil men, Manji will be kept alive with the help of sacred bloodworms that run through his body; healing every type of wound he can take. During his travels he meets Rin, the daughter of a dojo master who was murdered by master swordsmen, led by Anotsu Kagehisa. She asks Manji to be her bodyguard, and for him to help in fighting for vengeance. Manji agrees, but warns Rin that she must abandon everything she is in order to seek revenge.

It is hard to say whether or not this is a slow-paced or fast-paced show. At times there are scenes that move quickly, such as the fight sequences; but there are also scenarios filled with calmness and serenity. This could be looked at as the balance of the world of Blade of the Immortal, and it helps to make this anime look stunning. The sword fights are like that of Blind Swordsman and Samurai X, and the dialogue is told quite poetically. The violence in this show is very graphic, however, and it may be too much for some. Elements of rape and abuse are also hinted at, and could bother viewers that are sensitive to those sorts of matter. Nevertheless, this show cannot be recommended enough. It does the original manga justice, even if it runs just thirteen episodes.

Blade of the Immortal is one series where you won’t want to blink during this series. You might miss something beautiful or poignant if you do.

**** ½

Blade of the Immortal is available in America through Media Blasters.

The best way to start your week is with a new episode of the ESH podcast and this one has a little bit of everything in it. Video games, Anime, even a mention of manga.

This week the ladies each bring some game, tech and anime talk to the table starting with Pandalicious. It starts with an audience question about which will happen first zombie apocalypse/robot armageddon/uber flu and then movies into her experience with Steam on the mMc. Oh yeah, Panda highly suggests you grab both Steam and a copy of Portal for the Mac while it's free and that you should pick up The Cat Returns if you haven't had your daily dose of Studio Ghibli.

Then NinJaSistah chimes in with the first of her "build up to E3" pieces, this one is all about Natal and the (hopefully) next version of Harmonix RockBand series. That thought out of the way next up is a collection of iPad apps for the social networking master on the go and then a final pass through anime land with the manga turned anime series Maria Holic. Lesbians, cross-dressing, and barely legal sexual angst fill this Fooly Cooly wannabe but don't take my word for it. Check out some of the titles we came up with during the show but didn't use for it:

When Zombies Fight Robots, We're All in Trouble

ESHmom Told Me to Jump Into Acid

It's Full of Talking Pussies

Project Natal Better Not Turn Into ChatRoulette

and finally

Your Mother Wears Birkenstocks

Enough blabbering. Grab a cup of your favorite beverage and enjoy ESH Podcast Episode 197: Two, Put Your Junk In That Drop Box

Don't forget to send questions for ESHmom to answer to Questions@ESH.mobi.

Word just hit the "screets" that the super popular anime/manga, Bleach, will be coming to a theater near you. I'm excited, but skeptical. Thats right! Warner Bros. has snagged the rights to make Bleach a feature length film. Director Peter Segal (Get Smart, Tommy Boy) is negotiating to serve as a producer and hoping to add a darker feel to the film. Those of you familiar with Bleach know the story already. If not then here's a quick summary of the anime/manga as well as the planned film plot. A 15-year-old boy capable of seeing ghosts meets a female Soul Reaper (who escorts the "souls of the dead"), but a fight with an evil spirit causes the Reaper to transfer her powers to the boy, leaving her stranded in the human world and the boy with her old job as a fighter of evil.

I've seen Dragonball, Street Fighter, Tekken, and so many other great anime butchered in the feature film adaptation. I hope Bleach doesn't meet the same fate as its predecessors.

Well, not really as this fresh Monday episode of the Electric Sista Hood podcast is just chock fulla ladies!

Pandalicious and NinJaSistah welcome guest host PyroGirl to the show to chat about the anime and manga series Shugo Chara which former host MagicMysticGrl talk about back in the day. NinJa pretty much just adds the color commentary [sometimes with a really bad "valley" impression] as both Pandalicious and PyroGirl try to impart the seriousness that is Shugo Chara. By seriousness I mean heart of people birthing eggs housing their inner selves... cute, little, chibi selves.

Shugo Chara is a hard series for me to explain so we'll just impart a quick run down: Cat-Boy not-so-bad-baddie, hints of pedophilia, magical girl syndrome, and girls that turn out to be boys. Oh yeah, probably has some incest in there as well, but the anime series is 102 episodes deep keeping Chara from being some fly-by-night series. Need more convincing to listen to the episode? Here are some of the titles we didn't use

All these 80's Movies are Turning Her Into ValleySistah

Ferrets Steal Shiny Things Like Magpies (But Magpies Aren't Shiny)

For Most Eggs, Their Dreams Ends At KFC

I Thought Keybearers Liked Small Locks

and finally

It's a Good They Didn't Mention the Incest Until Last

So grab a glass/mug/pint of your favorite beverage and enjoy Electric Sista Hood Podcast Episode 181: I Don't Know Nothin' Bout Birthin' No Eggs

Once more, the ladies run this thang and it's funny as hell.

Pandalicious kicks the show off with her impressions of the XBLive community game 1 vs. 100 game and then Milk and NinJa chime in with some comic-con stuff which leads us down the path to COSplay. In case you didn't know, all roads lead to COSplay... and Zelda. Milk chairs the topic of Twilight Princess and adds the fun of Majora's Mask multiplayer.

We let the COSplay get the best of us, but NinJaSistah ends the tangent line by bringing it back to gaming and talking a bit about the upcoming NXE updates due to hit the Xbox dashboard this August, including the upcoming Avatar Marketplace and Netflix Parties. This podcast is chock full of awesome folks, so sit back and enjoy it!

It's coffee and funcakes time again, so kick back and enjoy Electric Sista Hood podcast 156: Drinking Helps Unity - And It's Also Where Babies Come From

Xenocore from Ultimate Quest joins us on the mic to talk a bit about anime series that drop some knowledge or substantial amount of reality on the viewer as well as those that don't. [yeah Overman King Gainer, I'm looking at you!]Pandalicious chimes in with her opinions on the Nintendo DSi title Rhythm Heaven and how it can be productive while addictive at the same time, and then there is NinJaSistah.

Riding a crazy wave of dual Mt. Dew regular and Mt.
When you take a gander at some of the titles we didn't use for this episode, you understand why you have to listen to it. We passed on things like:

It's up to you really, are you a raincoat licker or podcast enthusiast?

If you aren't, Pandalicious and NinJaSistah are plenty enthusiastic in this episode of the ESH podcast for everyone. The gals answer some of your questions, on both the anime and game tip, talk a bit about Lego Rock Band, the DragonBall movie how easy it is ignore superheroes alter egos, and one of the weirdest anime series I have ever heard of before, "Kyoran Kazoku Nikki." Seriously, it's a weird one only Pandalicious can love.

To give you better picture of this episode, take a peek at some of the titles we didn't use for this episode:

Those Fish Aren't Coy, They're Just Chillin'

The Wolverine Movie Mutated Into Something I Don't Want to See

It Depends On Your Definition of Bad

When You Give a Jellyfish a Name, It's More Than a Jellyfish

and to top it off

If You Can't Put Your Finger On It, You're Not Going to Please Anyone

See, it's random ESH goodness only in ESH Podcast Episode 143: Pirates Vs.
This episode of the podcast starts with a disclaimer and correction of information by Pandalicious with what's up [and more importantly not up] with her and DPL host DerrickH. Once she gets that off her chest, we get on with the business at hand and first up is the plight of The Pirate Bay copyright infringement lawsuit ruling, which starts off with a Pirates Vs. Ninjas debate. [Ninja's win by the way] We then segue into The Beatles: Rockband gushings, the current surge of western influenced or designed RPG's and even some anime with the multi-WTF-moment-creating series Peach Girl.

We only had a few alternate titles for this episode like, "More Douche Than a Daytime Drama," and "Ace Is the Place for Girls With Low Self Esteem." It was ridiculously fun to record, so grab your morning motivation and enjoy ridiculously ESH Podcast Episode 142: The Truth Burns Like Gin (It Does)

We start off answering audience questions, recap some left over comments from the G.I. Joe movie, and then dig into the nuts and bolts that make up the anime series Overman King Gainer

From perception issues with being black, female, and down with the technology stuff to how to best take advantage of when the StayPuft Marshmallow Man finally comes to claim his puffy vengeance. Normally at this time I would hit you with the list of titles we didn't use, but what is most important is getting down to the good stuff.

...Gimme dat podcast! Okay, it's not as catchy as this, but I had to grab your attention to remind you that we have a new episode of the ESH podcast ready for you now.

You can yell at me for the song being stuck in your head later.

In this episode of the podcast, we talk about all kinds of crazy stuff from the rampant ravishing of our treasured entertainment pasts to create feature length film like the upcoming Tekken movie and G.I. Joe movie to the classic game title Bubble Bobble which is currently available as Wiiware. Both NinJaSistah and Pandalicious answer some audience questions, including one from Bootleg Pete as well as promote the Gamer Daily News Spring Cleaning event, and then cap off the hour with the manga turned anime series Rideback

We are up to the usual monkey business in this episode, and if you don't believe me here are some of the titles we came up with but chose not to use for this episode:

Reality In Video Games - Isn't That An Oxymoron?

There Will Always Be Wire Hangers

He's More Buffy Than Buff

The Tekken Movie? That's The April Fool's Joke

It's At The Bottom End of The Wayans Scale

G.I. Joe Doesn't Make You Gay

Pandalicious Talks About Yu-Gi-Oh Abridged - And This Isn't A Rerun

It's Not A Motorcycle - It's a Motor-Psycho!

Panda's Swan Lake Would Include Alligators

You Know There's a Crotch Underneath That Dress

and finally

Next Week At This Time: Pandalicious of Love

See? Fun to be had here folks, so sit back and enjoy ESH podcast episode 140: Drinking Games Add So Much to Anime!

That's because this episode was recorded absolutely live at the E For All show this past weekend.

Ninjasistah appeared live at the show, along with guests Loserly from Dead Pixel Live and April Carlson and Mandie Bettencourt from Girls Got Game, who discuss the true integration of girls and gaming sites.

Pandalicious represents, as usual, by talking about her fear of upcoming live-action movies made of her favorite anime stories. And MagicMysticGrl shows up after a long absence to talk about everything .hack.

Here are the headlines that were rejected for this one:

Working Part-Time, 43 Hours a Week

In Anime, Girls Will Be Girls, and So Will Boys

When Microphone Positioning Becomes Erotic

Panda Has a Filter, She Just Has to Remember to Put It On

You Are Now Entering a WoW-Free Zone

I Never Said I Wasn't a Hypocrite

It's a loud, boisterous and lots of fun. Enjoy Episode 116: Live from L.A., It's Sistahs for All.

Monday is here again, and so is a new episode of the ESH podcast. The girl team is complete on this one so expect randomness galore this hour and change.

The episode kicks off with Pandalicious and MagicMystic discussing how they came to love and specialize on the topics they, well, are experts on here at camp ESH. [In case you are new to the game, Panda shows anime some love while Magic takes us down the dark and [every once and a while] psychotic path of manga. While the girls chat about their passions and influences toward them, Ninja tries to keep up by hanging back in the corner.

When the dust settles, NinJaSistah jumps into the conversation to talk about the resurgence of the Science Fiction genre in mainstream entertainment and the pros and cons of it's new found popularity. It's another weird and wacky episode guys, check out the titles we didn't use for this one:

Off-Topic's the Best Place to Be

if I Had Known, I Would Have Worn Pants @ M4M Night

if It's Good For Your Heart, It's Crap

If you ever sit and ponder on the idea of people of a young-ish age drinking, let this new episode of the ESH podcast be the proof you need to "just say nay!"

This week, MagicMystic returns and brings with her balance to the force while Panda and Ninja enjoy some adult juice before, during, and probably after the episode.

This episode starts with Ninja talking about the new XBLive Arcade title Go! Go! Break Steady that she keep calling "Go! Go! Beat Street" reports on some of the feelings around the industry about E3, and the hopefully triumphant return of the fighting genre on the back of Soul Calibur IV. Magic chimes in with her new found XBox-y goodness and general discovery of "the new" as she shares first impressions of her new XBox 360 Elite as well as latent desires for an XBLive account, and then Panda brings up the rear and talks about the anime and manga series, Full Metal Panic. The gals are back to normal and completely off topic as usual.

Here are some of the random things said during the show that could have been used as titles, but weren't:

Wallmart, Baby Come Back!

The Big "E" Is Big

MagicMystic Is Back, And Out Of The Closet

Jobless Wonder To The Rescue-ish

It's Not The Size of Your GamerScore, But How You Use It

You Don't Wanna Waste Your Bombs

Don't Pay The Toll When 5-0's On Your Ass

This Podcast Is Abridged

and finally

FUSION DANCE OF PAIN!

Hope you have a hot cup of coffee on hand, because you want to stay awake for this one folks. I give you, ESH podcast episode 107: Friends Don't Let Friends Drink & Podcast!

This title is hard to describe so I'll just give you the name...Deadman Wonderland.
