Magic Reviews: Full Moon wo Sagashite

    posted @ 6/09/2006 04:43:00 PM by MagicMystic
Kouyama Mitsuki is a regular everyday girl. When she was young she had a very special friend, but he moved away. Before he left, Eichi told Mitsuki that he loved her but she froze up and couldn't reply. They promised to follow their dreams, he as an astronomer and she as a singer, and that one day they would meet again.

Fast forward to age 12 Mitsuki is determined to become an amazing singer so that she can travel to America to find Eichi. The problem is that she has a tumor in her throat and it is incredibly painful to even talk.

Enter Takuto and Meroku, two fun loving shikigami coming to tell Mitsuki that she only has a year to live. She desperately begs a favor of them and they transform her into 16-year old, non tumerous Mitsuki so that she can go to a vocal audition. She passes with flying colors and gets a gig under the name Full Moon. But with a grandmother that hates music, shikigami who are going against their orders, a doctor who just wants the best for Mitsuki's health and an unaware manager things get a little weird.

This series is only being released as a manga here in the US. There are 5 volumes out so far but the 6th is released in July. There is also a 52 episode series that as of yet isn't being considered for licensing, according to what I've heard. Fortunately where there's a manga the anime isn't far behind.

I love this anime. For the most part it is a silly, funny, romantic show; but every once in a while there is something that rips your heart out and stomps on it. I like that, silly without basis just makes me irritable, silly that covers up the painful truth/past/whatever I like. This is an anime that is on my buy immediately when it's released list. The looming one year is in your mind the whole time and any time that the characters enjoy is a little bittersweet. Mitsuki manages to stay cheerful throughout most every challenge, but even she gets broken down a few times.

Final Verdict: Go buy the manga, go get the anime ASAP. But only if you don't mind getting your heart ground into itty bitty pieces by characters that you love to laugh with.
