    Magic Reviews: Battle Athletes Victory

    posted @ 7/25/2006 11:03:00 PM by MagicMystic
It's been a while since I did an anime review. It feels like all I've been doing is manga, which is mostly true. I recently finished watching Battle Athletes Victory. It has been out for quite a while and is fully released in the US. Battle Athletes Victory is the 26 episode tv series, there is also Battle Athletes the OVA.

Battle Athletes is the story of Akari Kanzaki, a student of the United Systems Sports Academy [USSA], a school where only the most elite athletes from around the solar system come to train with the technologically enhanced training equiptment and the renowned coaching staff. The most elite of the students are advanced to the University Satellite, where they are able to compete for the title of cosmo beauty. The school is only open to women and many of the students are fighting to become the next Tomoe Midou, the first and most famous Cosmo Beauty. However, Akari is Tomoe's daughter and her half-assed approach to competition often earns her the enmity of the more serious athletes that would give anything to be like Tomoe. It's not an easy task for her as fear, doubt and peer pressure get in her way, but friends, rivals and fans slowly encourage her to overcome her obstacles and become the best of the Battle Athletes.

I liked this anime. I didn't love it but it was pretty good. Akari started as an irritating character but she gets better as the series proceeds. I'd recommend this anime, but must warn you that the last 4 episodes are a bit wierd. You may want to stop watching at episode 22, because in episode 23 sports loving aliens show up and challenge the athletes of earth to a competition, and if the eathlings loose they will be enslaved by the aliens. The ending of episode 22 is where they should have stopped the series, everything is neatly wrapped up and finished.

I'm going to start doing something different with my anime posts. I love amvs and watch them whenever I can. Despite however much I may rant and rave about how awesome an anime is you may still have doubts about whether you want to watch it or not. As they say a picture is worth a thousand words, so a moving picture accompanied by good music must be worth a whole lot more. I'm going to start picking out a few good AMVs for the animes I review so that you guys can see a preview of sorts. I get all my AMVs from AnimeMusicVideos.org, affectionately referred to as The Org. As far as I can tell The Org is the largest library of collected vidoes out there. I searched their database and downloaded a ton of Battle Athletes AMVs, these four are my favorites and the ones I thought best represented the series. I've included the URLs for each, or if you go to The Org's main site you can search by the title of the video or it's creator.

Believe by Kevin Caldwell (proxy)- Kevin Caldwell is one of the most famous amv creators out there. He's so popular that someone set up a proxy membership on The Org to submit his work. This is my favorite amv for this series. It was actually the reason I checked out the series at all, and why I thought it was important to include the amvs in my reviews. This video concentrates on the strength and dertmination of the athletes.
    Watch It Now

Lonely Miracle by ErMaC- This video focuses on the loss and emotional aches of the series. Most of the footage concentrates on Akari Kanzaki's losses and how friendship gets her through bad times.
    Watch It Now

Reach Out by Kyrae Myist- This video focuses on the action and emotion of sports. Think eye of the tiger type message. It is a montage of all the characters competing in a variety of events. Most of the footage is from the OVA.
    Watch It Now

Strange Disease by Wakko227- I just had to add this video. It's silly and takes all the funny faces and antics of the series out of context and cobbles them together.
    Watch It Now

    Luv and Huggs,
