Now I love manga and anime, but every once in a while I come across something that really "chafes my ass", as Ninja would put it. Have you ever felt that way?
Ok, here it is. In Shounen/Shoujo (I'm not sure how to classify them) like Bleach and Naruto no one dies. That may sound like a horrible thing to say, but it bothers the hell outta me. There are long protracted battles to the death which are very exciting, but to the death just doesn't mean what it used to or maybe death isn't as perminent as our parents led us to believe. To the death apparently means to the hospital bed. You hear lines like "Oh noes, his spiritual energy disappeared" which means that the character is D-E-A-D, no longer on this mortal coil, pushing up daisies, has bought the farm, has gone to the big gay bar in the sky, breathes no more, has no heartbeat, cannot EVER come back, and yet a few episodes later they have healed, trained themselves with a cool new technique and are ready for more.
This bothers me to no end. It's as if the creators were too lazy to come up with a character to replace the dead guy. At least in DB they had a magical dragon who granted wishes that brought people back, these days it's just "Oh, him? He wasn't really dead, just hurt real bad." They make no excuses for how a character comes back alive, healthy and un-maimed. Dead/Not Dead How do you fuck that up? Is the heart beating or not? I know for a fact that it's not rocket science, rockets don't have hearts. You wouldn't have any trouble if I asked if the radio was on or not, how is this any different? Is there a thump-thump-thump or not?
You may be reading this and thinking about that one character that truly died in episode 12 or whatever, but remember this. There is a character that dies in like the first 3 episodes of Naruto, and he comes back in episode 130 or something. You find out that he was in jail the whole time. So remember, just because they aren't back yet doesn't mean they're dead.
