I'm sitting here getting ready to try out the Lego Star Wars 2 demo and I have a thought: "where have all the cheat codes gone?"
I know that sounds like a very odd thing to have pop in your head as you are about to plop in a demo disc but I can't help it. Where have all the cheat codes gone?
Before you get all huffy with me and say, "NinJa, you've got GameShark, CodeBreaker, all kinds of cheat enabling devices..." I'm not talking about that. I have a CodeBreaker disc, and have put in all those hex based codes to get unlimited ammo in a game here and there, but those aren't what I miss. For the most part I hate using devices like the GameShark and CodeBreaker, but not for the reasons you think.
I take no issue with cheating. Like I said earlier, I've cheated before. I like cheating, infinite double jump makes the Hades level of God of War muuuuuuch easier to deal with, believe me. But what I miss, or say I missing are the days of actual cheat codes. Remember turning on a game, getting to the start menu and pushing left, left, right, right, down, right, down, hearing a confirmation noise and starting 5 levels up in the game? Or have 5 extra guys? Where are those kinds of cheat codes?
I miss the days where you didn't need a flash drive to download saved games off the internet, or spend money on a subscription to a website in order to get codes. Why has cheating become such a marketable market?. I think that by requiring a gamer to buy hardware and software to get extra lives or make headway in a game is unfair.
You used to have a buddy in class that would slide you a note for something you should try in your game when you go home and it was exciting. Now, there is no excitement, you just plug in your cheat device, pick a cheat, and if the game loads off you go. No sharing with a friend, no new exciting thing to see, just a code exploit that takes the difficulty out of the game.
But like I said, it was just a thought. Now off to try out this Lego demo.

Is that a shuriken in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?
