But as a member of the gaming community I do, and I plan on raising all holy hell about it...you should too!
More news on the "War on Video Games" front children...so grab your favorite blankie and binky [pacifier] because I have to talk to you likes little babies to tell you all about this or THEY might come and take me a-way.
Screw it, let them come! As a rule I stay away from reading things on about.com. [I find their site layout gives my eyes the heebie geebies.] But then I came across this article through my favorite website [digg.com] and just had to read it all the way though to the end. Why? Mostly because the article depicts the growing problem that the gaming community has with politicians: the gross misconceptions about violence in games being presented as evidence to the need for change in the industry.
I won't ruin it for you, but the article is based on the study done by Dr. Kimberly Thompson to gauge the effectiveness of the ESRB rating system. Dr. Thomson tested a bunch of games that got "E" ratings [Including greats like Galaga, Ms.Pac Man, etc.,] and oddly enough found a WHOLE lot more violence in these games than the ESRB did. According to Dr.Thompsons study, Galaga is 100% violent and by no means warranted an "E" rating from the ESRB. [Centipede came in with a staggering 92% violence rating]
Now this article proceeds to tear Dr.Thompsons study a new asshole as it points out all the flaws in the setup of the game trials; what actually constitutes violence, what Dr. Thompsons definition of death is; [personally if the enemy respawns, it didn't die, but that's just me] and that the study only evaluates games over a 90 minute play period. This last one interests me the most because using that as a game I can load up a game like Tomb Raider Legend and run through Croft Mannor for an hour and a half and get that game a rating of 0% violence. See how the hypocrisy starts?
In all of this the scary thing is that Dr.Thompson presented this study [done in 2001 btw] as scientific fact as she testified before the U.S. Senate on the effectiveness of the ESRB rating system in July of THIS YEAR. People this is just stupidity for stupidities sake. We need to do something, and we need to do it soon...else you will find yourself having to go through a psych evaluation every time you want to buy a video game above the "Suitable for Certified Sane Persons" rating the government will impose on games.
The War on Video Games has started people, are you going to sit idle or get up and do something about it.
We know what side Jack Thompson is on, which side are you?

Is that a shuriken in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?
