Tenchi was one of the first anime I watched on American television, along with Outlaw Star and Cowboy Bebop. These series helped me learn to love anime all over again. Thank you Toonami. And now I share Tenchi with you. There are three Tenchi movies, and I will eventually be writing posts on them all.
In case you missed it, check out my post Tenchi the Movie: Tenchi Muyo in Love.
Tenchi the Movie 2: Daughter of Darkness (1997)
It's Christmas in the Misaki house but there is a demon watching the festivities, and she doesn't like what she sees. For Yuzuha, watching the celebration reminds her of bad memories from a summer Startica festival she shared with Tenchi's grandfather, back when he was a Jurain prince. Hating them all for their happiness, Yuzuha starts plotting her revenge. The next summer a girl named Mayuka suddenly shows up at the Misaki household and she's calling Tenchi daddy! Ryoko, Ayeka and the others don't take it too well, but when Washu tests Mayuka's genetic structure it matches Tenchi. Washu detected a temporal shift right before Mayuka appeared, so they suspect she's from the future, one of them may even be her mother.
Mayuka doesn't remember much more than Tenchi's face, so girls all take turns teaching her things about the world. Like any other typical anime summer montage they light firecrackers, eat melon and laze around in the heat. Although Mayuka's intentions are pure, Yuzuha has power over her and can control her actions. Unfortunately, she's not content to let Mayuka make friends, she wants to cause as much drama and destruction as possible. Eventually they have to go to confront Yuzuha, or she'll never leave Mayuka and Tenchi alone.
Yuzuha lives in her own dimension that looks like a little kids room. It's full of toys and the walls are covered in inset TV screens where she can watch the world. When Tenchi and Ryoko enter this world everything is bedecked and beribboned. They are attacked by killer toys, living ribbons and even a giant teddy bear. It's like a Christmas flavored Tenchi in wonderland as Yuzuha changes the landscape to suit her whim.
I rate Daughter of Darkness a 3/5, it'd be a 4 but since its Christmas themed it really isn't a year round movie. I'll give a Red MM for rage and love (of all types), a Green MM to round out the Christmas colors and for jealousy, and a Black MM for creatures of darkness. Daughter of Darkness is a typical Tenchi storyline full of catfights and amorous situations. Luckily, Mayuka is a refreshing change from the regular patterns, after so many series with the same characters it is wonderful to see a new face. She provides that and is a wild card in the way arguements play out.
