In which a Ruffled vigilante, diabetes immune doll and pacifist berserker run a clothing store and fight demons.
One day, a young girl named Sumire accidentally pricks her finger on a strange broach and is suddenly able to see demons, called Viruses. Of course, she immediately gets attacked by one. Coming to her aid, a young woman dressed in Goth-loli with an eyepatch dispatches the demon. The frilly pirate, Lucia, runs a clothing store/detective agency, Venus Vanguard, and she recruits Sumire to help her rid the world of Viruses. Lucia uses special anti-virus bullets and during a mission she accidentally shoots Sumire who goes berserk and kills the virus with her bare hands. Enter some badguys pulling all the strings from the wings, a soulless doll that won't stop eating chocolate and Lucia's tragic backstory and you've got a glimpse into the world of Venus Versus Virus.
This is a pattern anime through and through. Nothing in it was new or revolutionary, and 99% of it was easy to predict. None of the 'twists' surprised me, but that doesn't mean that I was disappointed. Sometimes it's nice to sit down and watch something that doesn't require you to think. Knowing in advance what's going to happen isn't always a bad thing either, anticipation is half the fun. This anime had me getting all exited when I knew shit was gonna go down and then turning to the empty air beside me to say "See! I TOLD you that was gonna happen." There's something very satisfying about lording it over the void sitting next to you. Like hearing an old familiar fairy tale. I mean, people are never going to stop remaking favorites like Cinderella, and I will always be right there waiting to read/see it again. This anime was like that. It's a story I've seen many times before and it was nice to see it again without actually having to watch the same title.
I love berserkers. For example, I hate both Ichigo and Naruto but squeal like a fangirl on crack laced with helium whenever they go Kyuubi-ish or Vizard. There's just something really awesome about a character that'll rip up their best friends like tissue paper. So, despite her over naivete and sickeningly sweet personality, I have a bit of a soft spot for Sumire. Another reason I really like her is that she has to frikkin shoot herself to use her power. Some of you may not remember, but a few months ago I talked about Persona 3 in the podcast and I raved about the same thing there. The main characters all had to shoot themselves to release their powers. I think that it's an awesome concept and I find it utterly hilarious to watch them shoot themselves.

I'd give Venus Versus Virus a 3.5 since it's the same ol' same old, but still worth a look. It's 12 episodes long and is currently being released in the US by ADV Films. Some pink for being cutsy, some teal for being just a tiny bit cool, some red for violence and an itsy bit of black cuz technically demons are scary.
