In the race to be your XB360 headset of choice, the folks over at Turtle Beach today announced the Ear Force X41 wireless headset, and it looks like it's no joke.I had the chance to visit Turtle Beach's booth while at E3 this year [along with Trition and Razer which both compete with Turtle Beach in the high-end gaming headset market] and was pretty impressed with the headsets I was able to try. The Ear Force X41 headset is a wireless over the ear headset with boom mic made specifically for the the XBox 360 system which boasts Dolby 7.1 channel surround sound capability.
At E3, the peripheral guys were nearly as bogged down as the software developers, but while trying out the different headsets one question kept constantly popping into my head, "What is the real benefit with these headsets?"
Sure, with any of the headsets I tried the sound was always clear, the explosions seemed to have more bass to them than any headset I currently use with my consoles and PC rig, but was it enough of a difference to justify the $129 or in some cases $199 price tag that came along for the ride? The jury is still out on this one as ten minutes with a headset is not enough time to form much of an opinion, but I'm working on some hands on time with some of these headsets and will be featuring my final thoughts during our August 31st "Cool for back to School" podcast.
