I have to think before I press a button?! Wha?
Looks as though Playstation has taken a step in a direction that we have all talked about in our selective gaming groups. It is a disappointment however that it is a PS3 Exclusive. I’d feel differently if I owned a PS3 myself, but I digress. Demon’s Souls comes out of From Software, a Japanese software company. If you are familiar with the Armored Core series, you know their work.
From Software primarily has made games for Sony’s Playstation, Playstation 2, Playstation 3 and its portable. It has branched out to the other consoles and even to mobile phone gaming.
Demon’s Souls is a fantasy RPG (Role Playing Game) centered on a dark time in a land that is being overrun by monsters and demons. So this sounds pretty basic right? Well yes it does however you aren’t just some Joe Bloke donning armor and waving a sword around. The game mechanics allow the player to customize their own playable character in terms of gender appearance, name, etc. However what this game also does is adds a touch of strategic planning. Each action the player is allowed to do has a value attached to it. This means every action whether it is an attack or a block will absorb a bit of your stamina. Once your stamina well has dried up you are unable to fight anymore. At this point you are demon food.
Some of the interesting online features include:
Co-operative play will allow three players to team up and play through different levels of the game. There will be a competitive element that will allow players to force themselves into another player’s adventure and become an opponent. Players will be able to see traces of fallen heroes in their game by means of seeing bloodstains that will unlock the battle for viewing only. On a lighter note, players can leave notes that contain hints to the game to aid those who come after them.
If you have a PS3 and don’t want to play Dungeons and Dragons then take a stab at Demon’s Souls; you will not be disappointed. It is interesting, intriguing and won’t require you to make your own costume, craft your own blade, or roll a critical success in order to feel accomplished. Save that for another day.
