ESH Cast #613: Suddenly, a song broke out

It happens in musicals all the time. Characters are conversing with each other, then, suddenly, one of them breaks out in song. Before the 1940's, the song had nothing to do with the action on stage, but that all changed with the musical Oklahoma!, which introduced the concept of songs that went along with what the characters had been talking about.

There is little difference between that and what happens on a regular basis in our weekly podcasts. One of us is talking about something when, suddenly, the other one breaks out into a song. The juxtiposition usually results in laughter, whereupon our producer excises that portion for future use in a clip show podcast.

This is one of those podcasts. Our producer has taken a snippet of us breaking into song, then added a portion of the genuine song to give you the meat of this week's show. Sure, we sing a lot in the show, but we are joined by an impressive array of other artists, including Magic!, Eric Carmen, Idina Menzel, The Fifth Dimension, Jennifer Lopez, Bubba Sparxxx (ft.
