One-Legged Woman Kicks Paul McCartney's Ass

So here's the high point of the story: The Beatle wants to give her $30 million, but the court awards her $50 million for the divorce. What would you call the story?

    Here are some more observations...

How will the EA vs. Take-Two battle turn out?

EA drags Take-Two into their car, royally screwing the company. Then after paying an exhorbitant amount of money to Take-Two, EA shoots 'em in the head, steals back all the money, then takes off in the car.

Who really won the HD disc format wars?

Toshiba, for getting out of the business before the bottom really fell out.

    Why do you say that?

It'll take years before a significant number of Blu-Ray movies can be available. There are few Blu-Ray disc manufacturing plants and the mastering process itself is much more difficult than HD-DVD. No computer manufacturer wants to put a Blu-Ray player into a computer unless it can also (a) play and record regular DVD discs and (b) also record Blu-Ray discs. And no one can make the dual-laser machines small enough for a laptop computer.

    Is that all?

Why, no. There's one more big impediment for Blu-Ray. It's owned by Sony, which owns movie studios and audio recording companies. Why should Universal, EMI, Disney or Paramount put their wares on Blu-Ray when they also have to compete in the marketplace with Sony. And when push comes to shove in a typical Blu-Ray manufacturing plant, who do you think is going to get preferential treatment? Why, Sony, of course. Microsoft has already said it's not going to put Blu-Ray on the XBox 360.

What's your last word on the subject?

Have you noticed that the price of Blu-Ray players has gone up since Toshiba announced the demise of HD-DVD. For Sony, that's like shooting yourself in the foot with a Super Soaker filled with acid.

Ziff-Davis filed for bankruptcy. Are they going out of business?

Chapter 11 bankruptcy affords a business the ability to restructure their finances, potentially making the company stronger than before. This, of course, does not apply to Ziff-Davis. They print stuff on expensive, UV-coated paper, where the addition of colored inks adds thousands of dollars to the process. They send out their tomes via the ultra-expensive U.S. mail to people who hesitate paying outlandish subscription prices, most of whom have to be fooled into thinking their subscription is about to run out, when they actually have nine more months of magazines coming to them. And all this in order to deliver stories, most of which were written and edited months ago. Magazines have been deforesting the Western Hemisphere for 100 years -- the "green" hue and cry is only beginning. Ziff -- and all other magazine publishers -- are about to die.

Being a vegetarian, I never have to worry about answering that question, but you can see what others have chosen here.

New Podcast Day: Heading to Anime Boston

    posted @ 3/17/2008 12:02:00 PM by evermore
With Anime Boston coming up this weekend, the Sistahs are excited as they can be. And that excitement shows in this week's episode of the podcast.

In addition to a preview of Anime Boston, the Sistahs discuss all facets of gaming. NinjaSistah talks about EA trying to take over Take Two, makers of the Grand Theft Auto series. And Pandalicious goes on and on about dating sim games -- particularly focusing on the question, "why aren't girls the protagonist in these games?"

In any case, it's well worth your hour and seven minutes to listen in. And in case you were wondering, here are the titles they rejected for this week's episode:

    The Non-JOYofTECH

    posted @ 9/07/2007 01:55:00 PM by Ninjasistah
Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. today announced that it has sold substantially all of the assets of its wholly owned Joytech video game accessories subsidiary to Mad Catz Interactive, Inc.

The Joytech sale supposedly reflects Take-Two's previously announced plans to divest its non-core businesses. I say, it's Take-Two trimming the fat from the company body.
"The sale of the Joytech assets is consistent with one of the key goals we established in our 100 Day Plan: to develop strategic alternatives for any operations that we determined to be outside our core publishing business,"
said Ben Feder, Take-Two's Chief Executive Officer. He then went on to say,
"We are particularly pleased that we accomplished this goal in a manner that will allow substantially all of our Joytech employees in the U.S. and U.K. to join Mad Catz, which is a highly respected provider of video game peripherals."

What I want to know is if this sale is going to help make the MadCatz peripherals any better. Can I get an amen? Can I?

Monday brings with it once again a crunchy new episode of the Electric Sista Hood podcast, and this one is just as off the wall and fun as the other ones!

All three regular hosts hop on the cast this week to bring you some info about some cool and not so cool goings on in the worlds of anime and video games. First up at bat is Panda "Stop Saying I Have Herpes" licious who shares with us her experiences with the anime Hare+Guu, which [like many anime series] is very weird.

Magic "I Forgot About the Giant Ball Monster" MysticGrl chimes in at the number two slot to share with us EVEN MORE .Hack// goodness with us by imparting her sort of found wisdom from .Hack//roots.

And bringing up the rear [as usual in this weekly menage] is NinJa "Get a Twinkie, Cuz Yer Gonna Need Brain Food" Sistah dropping her 2cents on the whole Manhunt 2 debacle.

Yeap! Grab yourself a Twinkie and something to drink, Episode 55: Welcome to the Eyefor Towel is up and running!

Take Two vs. Jack Thompson. And the Winner Is...

    posted @ 4/21/2007 01:35:00 AM by Douceswild
Things have been pretty light-hearted for the past few months around ESH. With last year’s console wars kicking off, there’s someone we forgot about. We totally dismissed good ole’ Jack Thompson from our minds, but he’s back. Thanks to Take Two, we’re FINALLY going to get a little downtime from Jacky-Boy.

We all read and/or heard about Jack Thompson’s crusade on video games, specifically Bully and Grand Theft Auto IV from Rockstar and Manhunt 2 from Take Two. If you haven’t then Google it and you’ll be up to speed. Basically, Jack tried to halt some games from these companies. Take Two sued Jack. Jack countersued Take Two and was held in contempt of court for, well, being Jack Thompson. Realizing that he was facing some jail time if the contempt of court charge panned out, J.T. waved the white flag and agreed that he:

    · will not sue or threaten to sue to block sale or distribution of any game published by Take Two or its subsidiaries (i.e., Rockstar)
    · will not communicate to Take Two or anyone doing business with T2 (like, say Wal-Mart) any accusation that the company committed any wrongdoing by selling its games. Thompson is not restricted from criticizing the content of T2 games, nor is he prevented from acting as counsel in lawsuits brought against Take Two by other parties
    · will make any future contacts with T2 through its attorneys

In return, Take Two dismissed their counterclaim and dropped their contempt of court charge on Thompson.

Jack Thomson claims that he is extremely concerned about the effects that video games have on those who play them. He claims to believe whole-heartedly in his crusade and there is nothing more important than the safety of kids from these violent video games…nothing except his own safety and keeping himself out of jail. When asked to comment on the settlement, Jack Thompson said,

“I’m still concerned about the effect of these games on the youths of today…but I ain’t going to jail for them. Those little smacktards are on their own.“

OK. I’m kidding. He didn’t really say that. He just showed us that by his actions. I don’t know about you, but I can sleep much better knowing that he’s got my back.

The papers of Jack Thompson’s official defeat are here.
