    Will Motorola's New Android-Based Phone Really Cliq?

    posted @ 9/25/2009 03:09:00 PM by Douceswild

    Motorola has joined the Android OS team by unveiling their Motorola Cliq cell phone at their press event last month and it ain't looking too shabby.

    The Cliq puts heavy focus on social networking and messaging which are two of my top priorities in a mobile device. I know. Making calls SHOULD be top priority, but who does that with cell phones anymore? The device functions on Google's Android OS so you'll notice similarities with the G1 and MyTouch 3G.

    Motorola also debuts their Moto Blur function, which allows you to manage and login to just about all of your social networking apps from one platform, sort of like IM+, BeejiveIM, etc. The Cliq takes a page from the HTC Hero device (also Android-based), connecting together a lot of the social aspects and functions of the phone instead of having them spread across multiple apps.

    All of the information I read on the phone said that it had a slide-out keyboard and those of you that know me and listen to Geek Aggro know that slide-outs are a turnoff for me. BUT, as I was catching up on my Phonedog cell phone reviews, I found the above video that shows off Androids Cupcake virtual keyboard on the device! Now I'm excited. I don't mind the option of a slide-out keyboard for text input as long as it's not the ONLY option.

    The Motorola Cliq is rumored to hit T-Mobile in October. I'm sure once it gets closer to launch, T-Mobile will also announce a price on the device. Stay tuned.

    Phone specs here.

    Google's Android OS Could Be iPhone's Terminator

    posted @ 9/17/2008 09:11:00 AM by Douceswild

    If you haven't heard of Google's new Android mobile phone OS, then start researching it now, because if you thought your iPhone was the shiznit, then the HTC Dream phone might have you rethinking that.

    It's being rumored that HTC's Dream mobile phone will go on sale September 23rd through T-Mobile. Sources say T-Mobile plans to hold a press event in New York City on September 23. However, if we've learned anything from Apple's tactics, the date of a press conference may not be the actual release date of the device, but rather a announcement of the release date. So don't get your hopes up.

    From what I've seen of Google's Android OS, it quite possibly will give Apple's iPhone some competition. I will definitely keep my eye on the OS and the phones running it and if it pans out to be the "iPhone killer", then I'll either be switching service providers or looking into an unlocked model.

    Here's the HTC Dream.

    THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU Gameloft! Why am I thanking one of the most successful cell phone game developers? I'll tell you why. Gameloft has given me Chuck Norris Brings the Pain for my cell phone! They have managed to take all of the bad assosity that exudes from Chuck Norris and poored it into one cell phone game.

    Chuck Norris Brings the Pain put you in the boots of Chuck as he roundhouse kicks his way through a rogue Soviet army to rescue POWs from Cambodia. Wait! He's not finished. After that Mr. Norris has to save America from an invasion! This work of art shouldn't be classified as a game, but as documentary of a day in the life of Chuck Norris.

    Check out the gameplay. There's no sound to the video, but are you surprised? Chuck Norris NEVER let's you hear death coming.

    Nokia 5800 (Tube)..Soon Tu-be Amazed

    posted @ 7/23/2008 10:41:00 PM by Douceswild

    I went see The Dark Knight movie this weekend and although it was a great film and there were many awesome moments in the movie, I'd say the one part that really caught my attention and stuck with me was when Morgan Freeman pulled out one of the most badass-looking cell phones I have ever seen. I couldn't wait to get home and research it.

    All I could make out from the movie was that the phone was Nokia branded. After some Googling, I found out that the phone is one of Nokia's newest models, the 5800 or Tube. I use an iPhone, but if anyone asks me who makes the best and most reliable cell phone in the industry, I'd quickly say Nokia. Although it looks like another iPhone copycat, it's being reported that the fuctionality of the phone is much better than Apple's "Jesus phone". Here's a Q&A video and the specs:

    * 3.2-inch touchscreen display with 16 Million colors
    * 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus
    * Quad-band (850/900/1800/1900Mhz) GSM/EDGE radio

    -3G UMTS/HSDPA

    * Bluetooth 2.0
    * WiFi
    * GPS
    * 3.5mm headphone jack
    * TV-out port
    * 140MB on-board storage
    * 111 x 52 x 14.5 mm
    * 104g

    No official release date or carrier has been announced yet, but the phone is rumored to hit the market between the end of 2008 and 1Q 2009. Can someone get Batman on the phone? He might have more info.

    Apple's WWDC Announces 3G For Me

    posted @ 6/10/2008 12:02:00 AM by Douceswild
    Ok. You guys must be tired of me going on and on about the new iPhone. Well guess what? I got MORE news about the upcoming new iPhone and you don’t want to miss this. The release date has been announced!

    So, Apple’s Worldwide Developer’s Conference started yesterday and will commence through the week. A lot of people predicted that Steve Jobs would announce the new 3G iPhone along with the release date and they were not mistaken. Mr. Jobs also released pricing info, but we’ll get to that in a bit.
    First, let’s talk about some of the features Apple has in store for us starting with the App Store in early July. This will be the main attraction for the 2.0 update. Some of the available apps talked about at The WWDC were:
    1. Super Monkey Ball ($9.99)
    2. Auctions – Ebay tool on your phone. Check listings, winnings, and bid from the phone. (free)
    3. Loopt – a location-aware social network. Displays a map with pins representing where your friends currently are. User profiles show show a log of where the person has been and the photos they’ve sent in. You can call or text them from the app. (free)
    4. TypePad – blogging tool for the iPhone (free)

    These are a few of the apps announced. You can see the entire keynote here.

    Here’s the most important part though! Finally!! A look at the new iPhone, release date, and pricing!!

    Here's Steve doing the honors…

    You know ya’boy Douce has a bit more for you. The prices announced will be with a 2yr service agreement with AT&T. Here’s a bit of info from the inner-circle of AT&T. The 3G data plans will cost $30. That’s ten bucks more than the 2G plans. OMG…They raised the prices again…YOU BASTARDS!!

    Is RIM Bold Enough To Bring The Thunder?

    posted @ 5/17/2008 10:36:00 PM by Douceswild

    RIM has been pumping out the Blackberry for a long time and I’ve been a big fan of the device and just gave them up last year for the iPhone.

    The Blackberry is still the best emailing device on the market and also a top-notch cell phone in my opinion. I’ve used every Blackberry since the 7100 and have not been disappointed at all. They’re only getting better with the two up-coming releases, the Bold (9000) and the Thunder (9500), which has no catchy name as of yet.

    I won’t go into much detail about the device until I’m able to actually get some hands-on time with each one. What I will say is that along with the rumors of the second-generation iPhone coming in June, there are also whispers of the Bold coming to AT&T around the same time. As for the Blackberry 9500, no release date has been announced either as far as I know, but it’s supposed to be a Verizon lifetime exclusive product.

    I was prepared to get the new iPhone, but now I’m not so sure after seeing the Thunder.

    Here’s a picture of the Bold.

    iPhone 2: Faster Data, Lower Price

    posted @ 5/09/2008 12:08:00 PM by Douceswild
    I’ve been enjoying the hell out of my iPhone since it released in June of ’07, but Apple may have me trading it in a month or so for a beefed-up version.

    It’s been confirmed. Apple will be releasing the iPhone 2 very soon (maybe next month). My sources inside the company have tipped me on an up-coming vacation blackout for all employees from either June 9-11 or June 15-19. This the same thing that happened last year before the first iPhone's launch date was released to the public.

    We can expect faster data from the new model as well as a lowered price with a 2-year service agreement, of course. You’ll have the choice of either an 8gig or 16gig model with price tags of $199.99 and $299.99. It was only a matter of time before AT&T figured out a way to lock us into a solid contract, but that’s not bad prices for such an awesome phone. It's unknown as of yet what the retail price of the phone will be and how this will affect the price of the first-generation phone.

    Joyous praises were heard when the news was released that the second-generation iPhone will take advantage of the much faster 3G service. What does this mean for us? Well, it means faster internet for one. It also opens up the possibility of Video Share and Cellular Video a.k.a. Mobile TV. There's also talk of AT&T charging extra for 3G usage...(bastards). I'll be pissed if they raise the charge but it may be worth it not having to wait for the page to load when checking out some ESH goodness.

    There have been rumors of multiple colors as well as a slimmer model. I don’t know how true this is, but I’d love an all black iPhone. I don’t really care if it’s slimmer. The current size of the phone is perfectly fine with me, but I could go for a smudge-resistant screen. I don’t know about you guys, but I’m constantly tapping and swiping that screen all day long and by the time I'm done, a blind cop could lift a print from the screen.

    Start making preparations now to camp your local stores because last year, supplies were gone in minutes at some locations. Keep checking back for more info, because as soon as we know it, you'll know it.

    Zune To Be Amazed

    Seeing as how Apple did it, it was only a matter of time before Microsoft decided to make their own version of the “Jesus Phone”. Move over iPhone. The zunePhone is coming.

    Just over six months ago, Apple released their revolutionary iPhone upon the world and the cell phone industry has never been the same. Other manufactures have tried to follow in the footsteps of Apple since then, such as HTC’s Touch and LG’s Prada, but only one company can truly bring us the cell phone of all cell phones and that’s Microsoft. Ladies and gentlemen, Bill Gates and Microsoft proudly bring you the zunePhone.

    Stop! Can Touch This!

    posted @ 8/14/2007 11:09:00 AM by Douceswild
    Apple’s iPhone brought us a completely unique way to interact with our cell phone, but most importantly it sent a message to all other cell phone manufactures. That message was, “STEP UP YOUR FRACKIN’ GAME!” I think that message was definitely received loud and clear.

    It was only a matter of time, but we all knew that other cell phone manufactures would be mimicking the iPhone’s interface movement. They had to. The iPhone raised the bar on how we interact with our cell phones but one of the most frequent complaints I hear about the iPhone is that aside from it’s great interface, it’s missing a lot of programs that pocket pc and other PDA/Smartphones come with such as instant messaging, creating Word and Excel documents, video capabilities. Although I’m sure a lot of these things will be added in future firmware updates and later hardware upgrades, you may be looking for something that gives you these things now.

    The people over at HTC (creators of the 8125 and 8525) bring you the HTC Touch phone. The phone runs on Windows Mobile 6 and is unlocked so you’re not pinned to a specific service provider. It utilizes the new TouchFlo technology that gives you functionality similar to the iPhone. For all of those who love the functionality of the iPhone, but want the applications of current-market PDA’s then the HTC Touch might be for you. I don’t think it’s being sold in the U.S. at this time but it can be purchased through Ebay and other online market places.

    Enjoy!

    It's Time to Collect

    posted @ 3/02/2007 08:52:00 PM by Douceswild
    Almost everyone has something that they like to collect. It might be anime, manga, action figures, or movies. Today, it’s all about collections and those items that we’re proud to display.

    There are tons of things that I enjoy collecting. Games, strategy guides, and computer software are just a few. If I were going to put anything at the top of my list of prized collectibles, it would have to be cell phones. I have a weakness when it comes to those little gadgets. If it’s sleek and flashy with lots of buttons and features, then I have to have it. From the Motorola RAZR to the Cingular 8125, I’ve been going through cell phones like they were shirts.

    I’ll rotate cell phones depending on my mood or where I’m going. If I’m running errands around town, then I’ll grab the Motorola RAZR or maybe the Samsung D357 for easy in and out of pocket use. If I want more of a professional look, I’ll whip out the Treo 650 or one of my Blackberries to have my email and internet accessible.

    What’s your pride and joy? What is that you’ve worked long and hard on collecting? Let us know what you’re interested in. It gives us an idea of what you would like us to write or talk about in the future.

    Product Review: Helio Kickflip

    posted @ 1/16/2007 11:18:00 PM by Ninjasistah
    Don't call it a phone, or the Helio people will get mad at you... seriously have you seen the ads? They try really hard to make you think that the thing you are buying from them isn't a phone, but it is a phone, just don't let on that you know that I know and told you that's it's not what they know it is. Ok?

    I got one of those Kickflip pho... devices in from Helio to review [because they think we're pretty kick arse] and I have to say that after I got a charger in for the thing [they kinda forgot to include it in the box] I've been having a lot of fun with the device... it not being a phone and all. I started playing around with the Kickflip the moment I got it to test how strong the swivel part actually worked. My major pet peeve with many phones that have the "swivel to reveal the keypad" feature don't use a very strong or stable swivel at all. After opening and closing the Kickflip about fifteen times I was impressed with how sturdy a flip the opening is. The device has definitely earned the name "Kickflip" as the opening swivel [i.e. flip] has some kick to it, and while the device makes the sound of a sword being removed from its sheath when you open it, the more accurate sound would be a compound "whoosh-thwang" kinda deal. What I'm trying to say is that from the get go the device feels solid and not flimsy, so that earns it brownie points to begin with.

    My next step was to actually use the pho...device to make a couple of long distance calls. I found the keypad actually nice to use as the keys were backlit [good] and the numbers much larger than the letters on the keypad. This helped me tremendously as I am used to the layout on my Treo smartphone so most phones that do not have QWERTY keyboards piss me off to no end. I have no love for multitap interfaces, period. I still don't like multitap for this phone, but I understand it's not mean to be a smartphone so I'm not going to hold the multitap against Helio. The keypad layout is nothing new, nav button in the middle flanked by the call approve/deny buttons, two buttons at the top in the left and right hand corners as "menu" and "select" options. This part of the pho... device is nothing remarkable. What is worth noting are what are on the sides of the device, that's where some of the fun stuff resides when it comes to the Kickflip.

    On one side of the device you have a volume up and down control, a USB port for connecting your device to your computer to sync data, and what I can only figure is a port to somehow connect your pho... device [dammit, did it again] to your TV. [Why else would the icon look like a lil TV set?] Then on the other side of the device are previous, play/pause, and next buttons as well as a camera button. These buttons by themselves don't make up much, but it's how the Kickflip lets you use them that is cool. The Kickflip can playback mp3 audio in stereo [much like the Verizon Chocolate phone] but the Kickflip did it first. Helio even provides you with a stereo headset with mic so you can listen to tunes or make calls without having to switch between headsets or give up on having stereo audio. This I like, as my major complaint about my Treo is that I can't use it to really enjoy music because my current headset is mono only. Bugger!

    Moving on.

    For me, the greatest fun that I have had while using the Kickflip has been in taking pictures. Because I can hold the device horizontally like I am used to with my digital camera, and use the button on the side to quickly enter picture mode, it's extremely easy for me to take pictures with the thing on the go. Add to this that the camera in the Kickflip is 2 megapixels, can take a single image at up to a 1600x1200 resolution or a series of "snaps" at 320x240 with a flash, and ninja is a very happy little girl. I love being able to take a snapshot of things as I'm on the go because weird shit seems to happen all the time in my area. [Especially when I'm in the district] So having a camera that I can snap a picture or series of pictures with and immediately send it to a friend so they can share in my WTF? moment is just plain cool. It's at this moment of playing around with the device [haha, got it right that time] that I start understanding what Helio means when they say this thing is not a phone... and I do agree with them on that. When it comes to being a phone, the Kickflip is lackluster.

    Calls aren't very clear or easy to hear [even with the volume turned all the way up] unless you are using the headset. Loading your address book to the thing requires that you use a web interface that you enter your data into to then connect and sync to your device. Quite the pain in the pooper if you already have your contacts in an existing address book and have, say, over 40 or so people with multiple phone numbers. A sync like that is no fun, to say the least. Purchasing ringtones and screensavers/wallpapers to bling out your ring are just as easy/cumbersome to purchase for the Kickflip so you get no added bonus there. You can set individual ringtones for people in your address book, which has become a lifesaver for me lately, but otherwise it is just a phone.

    The saving grace for Helio is that their product is a 3G device, so data transfers to and fro are fast, and, well, the thing is cool looking... and feeling. I got interested enough in this thing to get some wallpapers and ringtones for it, and I don't even get to keep the damn thing!

    Without a doubt the Kickflip has some very cool other uses than just being a phone, but what I need most out of a device that I'm going to have in my pocket is that it be a good and solid phone that I can easily get my contacts and email on... anything else is just gravy.Taking it all into account I'm going to have to give the Kickflip from Helio a 3 out of 5. One teal one because it's a sexy little device. I mean, the sound effect on opening it up is a nice little touch Helio. I'll give it a light blue candy as it's obvious that Helio has tried to make this device too cool and one white one because at it's core it's a decent phone whose future could be very bright.

    Is This the Next Great Mobile Gaming Device?

    posted @ 1/09/2007 11:44:00 PM by evermore
    What would you think of a mobile gaming device with these specifications? It's only 0.46 inches thick. It has a speaker, a microphone and a camera. Held horizontally, its screen is 480 pixels wide, just like the PlayStation Portable, and 320 pixels tall, nearly 50 pixels taller than the PSP's 272 pixels. At 160 pixels per inch, its screen is the most dense of any standalone portable gaming device. It's got up to 8 GIGABYTES of RAM (compared to the PSP's 32 MEGABYTES). It's got touchscreen controls. It has 802.11 b and g Wi-Fi capabilities (PSP has only b) and Bluetooth built in.

    Oh yeah, it's also a mobile phone, an internet browser and an iPod.

    The iPhone, announced earlier today during Apple's MacWorld keynote speech, is a whole lotta things. Most people are going to buy it because it's an amazing mobile phone combined with an iPod. But there are a lot of reasons why it could become a force among gamers.

    First of all, its mere specifications make it better than any standalone mobile gaming system. Although the screen is not physically as large as the PSP (the iPhone's screen is only 3.5 inches, compared to 4.3 inches for the PSP), it meets the PSP in pixel width and exceeds the PSP in pixel height -- the PSP's pixels are simply larger and, as a result, coarser.

    The iPhone is half as thin (0.46 inches vs. the PSP's 0.9 inches) and half as heavy (135 grams vs. the PSP's 280 grams). Held horizontally, it is a third less in width (4.5 inches vs. PSP's 6.7 inches) and a half-inch less in height (2.4 inches vs. PSP's 2.9 inches).

    There's just one problem: no games.

    The gaming market for the Macintosh dried up when the computer's 10th operating system OS X arrived in 2000. But the iPhone is exactly the catalyst that could turn things around for gaming on the Mac.

    The iPhone shows great potential in this area. It has Google Maps and the Opera browser built in. It has "push" email, provided by Yahoo, which gives it email capabilities similar to that on a Blackberry. It is able to run Apple's Dashboard widgets, which should at least allow for simple games when it is available in June. Everything else is a big question mark: How much RAM is there? What is the graphics card? Is there stereo Bluetooth support? Will third-party Dashboard widgets work? Is there going to be a Software Development Kit to allow high-end game makers access to the device?

    Perhaps few people will even care. With the Nintendo DS and PSP slugging it out on the high end and LG, Samsung, Nokia and other cellphone makers battling each other in that arena, maybe no one will take a second look at gaming on an iPhone.

    But the sheer combination of all those different technologies sure is intriguing, isn't it?

    Product Review: Otterbox Treo Case

    posted @ 12/22/2006 11:57:00 PM by Ninjasistah
    Recently I got my hands on a new Palm Treo smartphone case from OtterBox and I have to say, after some testing I'm pretty surprised.

    From the first glance at the case, it's obvious that this ain't no simple sleeve... the Treo 1920 case is ideal for use in outdoorsy settings. The case itself is a
    Polycarbonate/ABS shell with Rubber over-molding for grip and drop protection
    and while I'm not exactly sure I know what that means, I can tell you that in this case I can comfortably drop my Treo 650 and not immediately panic. Coming from me, that's huge. They way I care for my tech gadgets drive anal-retentive people up the wall. It's sad really. Moving on.

    The case shell comes in two pieces... the front which has all of the keys [which line up perfectly with those on the front of my device] and screen protector while the back piece has the latch you use to hold the two pieces tight together in effect creating a Treo cocoon of safety. It works well. The latch is quite heavy duty and in all my test "oops I dropped my Treo" tries it never un-latched itself. Double cool. The case has a see-through hold in the spot where the camera is, a vent over the speaker location, and an opening at the bottom to allow me to charge or sync the device while it's in it's protective encasing. So no functionality is lost at all. It even has a "grip" on the side to put my stylus in so I don't have to take my Treo out of the cocoon in order to use all of it's functionality. Triple cool.

    One thing about this case that I cannot stress enough is that the case itself is water resistant and not water-proof. This should be evident by the fact that you don't make an airtight seal when enclosing your device inside the two pieces of the OtterBox case. You can see easily that the speaker vent as well as the receiver vent are, well, vents... as in open spaces where air and liquid can get in. I guess after releasing the product, a few of the rugged outdoorsy types didn't realize this, and waterlogged their [previously useful and functional] smartphones.

    As far as the water-resistant part, the case delivers. I took it out on one of the more rainy/miserable days that we've had recently in VA and [thought my head told me not to do it] I whipped my protected Treo out in the middle of a downpour to find it very well protected. With no umbrella to my name I proceeded to flip open the outer screen protector to use the stylus to access email, make a phone call and add an event to my calendar. Fearful that at any moment my Treo would be turned into a paperweight, I finished my list of tasks and quickly found cover in order to rip the case off my phone and check it's status. It was dry to the bone. TA-DA! I returned to my apartment feeling very satisfied. Yes, this case was going to get an exceptionally high rating from me. I say was as after my return to the joint, I found the only kink in the cases armor.

    When I made my first calls with the device in the case I had been using my BT headset. You know, the little hands free things you stick in your ear to talk on your cellphone that make you look like "Uhura" from the "Star Trek" TV show. I had to answer a call while the headset was charging and found that the audio quality was rather poor. It was nearly impossible for the person on the other end of the line to make out what it was that I was trying to say to him. I knew it was going to be a big problem when I heard myself say, "...just call me on the land line." I HATE using my damn land line. After getting the details from my friend I took a better look at the case and found my problem. Because the case is so think [it add quite the bit of bulk to your Treo] it basically put too much space between your mouth/ear and the actual receiver/speaker... which adds to the already poor audio quality of sound the Treo has, which is a shame.

    In reality, this case is not intended for me. It's clear that this case is designed for people working outdoors, on constructions sites, camping, hell, anywhere that mother nature might try to put the pimp slap on your smartphone. And while I'm mostly an urban ninja myself, I find myself using this case more and more... as long as my BT headset is charged. In honesty, it has replaced another Treo case in my "nearly everyday usage" category.

    I'm going to give this case a 4/5 because it does every single thing that it says it does which is very rare in products these days, and it's just well made. Anything that makes me so comfortable flinging my smartphone around like it cost 5 bucks [and not $400] is a damned fine product. I'm cutting it short of 5/5 for being a tad pricey [coming it at $129.95] and for lowering the existing poor in-call audio quality of the Treo 650. Two blue candies for being something that the boys [or tomboy's in all of us] want and would enjoy, one purple for being so solid, and one green one for being no-so cheap.

    If you are in need of some quality water-resistant solutions for your portable devices, I recommend that you pop by the OtterBox website... I will be from now on.

    Tell Him You're A Gamer Too

    posted @ 10/12/2006 05:02:00 PM by Ninjasistah
    I try not to take up "girl gamer issues" while writing for the site, but I've been asked this question so often that broke down and put this together.

    Most of my guy friends are gamers, and ask me how they can convert their girlfriend into a gamer. It has always been my belief that all girls are gamers, it's just finding the right game for the right girl. At the same time, I get asked in conversation by my girl gamer friends how they should break it to the guy they are dating/boyfriend that they are a gamer. I am not "Dear Abbey" or [belch] "Dr. Laura" but I offer this as help.

    No. 5: Accessory Love
    Wear some game related article of clothing or jewelry accessory. Some 1up mushroom earrings, or a t-shirt featuring some well known game character that you like When he notices it, he'll probably mention how cool your earrings/shirt/whatever is and why he thinks it's cool. This is your opening to share your knowledge of games and start the "I've been playing video games since..." conversation.

    No. 4: Technology To The Rescue
    It might seem simple but let your tech speak for you if you [for whatever reason] don't know how or when to start this conversation. Got a computer? Set your desktop wallpaper background to one from a video game you love playing. There are plenty of game wallpaper resources out there. You can visit the official websites of video games and check out their downloads or media sections for wallpapers, Google image searches, they all work. Or, you can change your ringtone to some well known tune from a video game. Many cell phones today can play MP3's as ringtones, so get you a transfer cable [if neither your computer nor phone have Bluetooth] and slap one of these tunes on your phone. I find it's a definite attention getter, and you'd be amazed how many other gamers you'll "out" using this technique. In any case, either of these things will help get the "I enjoy video games" idea passed on to your man.

    No. 3: Magazine Oppsies
    Now I have one friend that was terrified that the guy she had been seeing for a couple of months was going to ditch her when he found out she was a gamer. I don't know why but she was absolutely positive he was going to think she was some kind of masculine chick hiding in a petite girl body. I know, it's stupid, but as she went on and on about how she was hiding her game systems before he came over, I realized it was a serious fear in her mind, so I had to help. I told her instead hiding all of her OPM and Computer Gaming magazines, leave a couple out on the coffee table. When the boyfriend comes over, let him in and offer him a seat on the couch by the mags, then excuse yourself to the bathroom to finish getting ready and leave him there with nothing but the gaming mags to keep him entertained while you are away. When asks when you got into gaming [because he's never seen this stuff before] just be honest. Say you've been into gaming for a while and why, and then just say that you put all that stuff away because you didn't want him to think you were weird. I'll all but guaranty that 10 times out of 10 he'll be excited and cool about it.

    No. 2: Don't Hide Your Systems.
    The same friend from suggestion number 3 was also hiding her game systems every time the dude came over to pick her up. I told her she needed to stop that shit... pulling all those cables out and putting them back a few times a week had to have been a huge PITA. Leave them out. Duh, he'll get the clue. [I told you he would Jenn ;)]

    And finally, No. 1: Just Tell Him You're A Gamer.
    I know it seems over simplistic, but admitting that you are a gamer is not like owning up to a case of herpes... no one's going to start running for the hills because you like Halo2, and if they do they're an asshole plain and simple. Being a girl an enjoying video games doesn't make you any less feminine, attractive, smart, or anything. It's nothing to be ashamed of, or hide. I'm really tired of having to play 20 questions with women that I meet to find out if they are a gamer. Most of the ones I ask directly if they like video games go all the way round the bush, "Oh, I guess they are ok... I don't really have time to play them... My brother has a system and makes me play with him." But once I get to know them, find out that they are as into gaming as I am and I get a little pissed. I think about all the time we missed out on playing together, sharing game tips, raggin' on Sony and their fanboys, and all because of some stupid presumed stigma of being a girl gamer. Get over it already. A lot of other girl gamers have. There are more and more girl gamer clans out there that actually have some hard core gamers in their clan... if they can be proud to be gamers that happen to be girls, so should you.

    As I said, I usually stay away from this kind of topic because I hate being in a position to enable these kinds of feelings in other girl gamers. That being said, I'm also getting tired of the look of astonishment on guy gamers when I tell them I'm a gamer. First I get the look, then I get the "you probably play stuff like Nintendogs and The Sims [which I do] but I also play God of War, Devil May Cry, Amplitude, BloodRayne, Dynasty Warriors, and Zone of The Enders. After that list, the next thing that happens is I get a little respect out of them, and then they want to know how to get their girlfriend into gaming. I say ask your girlfriend if she likes video games. Whenever you are dating with people, especially if you are just starting out, you have that conversation where you talk about all the stuff you like and don't and crap. Bring this up then. "I dig playing video games with people, how about you?" It's short, sweet, and to the point. Here's the hard part: listen closely to the answer. If you get the, "My brother makes me play with him, I think they are cool, but I don't really play all that often" lines just follow up with a, "Would you like to play with me sometime?" Put the ball in her court and don't push. Let her decided if this is an activity that she wants to share with you or not. If she says sure, ask her what kind of game she likes or thinks she would like, don't just make her play something that you have because you're the bomb at it. [She'll think your a controlling douchebag]

    And that's that. I've done my good deed for the day in trying to help folks out on both sides of this thing, so no more complaining.

    Date, play, and be merry!

    ESH is Goin' Mobile

    First ElectricSistaHood was in your computer. Then ESH was in your iPod. Now the Sistahs are sneakin' into your phone.

    If you've got the ability to surf the internet with your cell phone, you'll soon be able to start reading the latest blog entries by the Sistahs on the same phone.

    ElectricSistaHood is now available on internet-ready phones at the URL: esh.mobi

    We kept it nice and short for you. Nobody likes to have to hit those phone keys too much.

    While the new site doesn't have much on it yet, we'll be adding new functionality in the coming weeks -- particularly the latest blog posts by the Sistahs. In the future we hope to be able to deliver the weekly podcast directly to your phone.

    You can access the site only on internet-ready cell phones that don't have a graphical web browser. For example, if your phone has only the standard telephone pad, you can probably visit the esh.mobi site without any problems. If your phone has a full typewriter keyboard, you'll probably get transferred to the full ESH website.

    In any case, this gives you yet another way to enjoy the Sistahs while you're in transit from one place to the next. We know you'll appreciate the company.

    All Good Things

    *note: if you get the title reference give yourself a pat on the back...you are a kindred spirit.

    Amazon.com has put a halt on taking Wii pre-orders...all long before they could send out their "we are now taking pre-orders for the Wii" email. Yeah, I signed up for that email and didn't get messaged...I'm STILL pretty pissed about missing out on getting my pre-order in, but what can you do? They said they were sorry.

    Still doesn't get me a Wii on launch day now does it?

    Anywho, I know you've been patient, and I applaud you...you made it this far without complaining. Hurray for you! Wthout further adieu, I bring you my top three reasons to buy a Nintendo Wii!

    Reason No.3: Virtual Console
    You want to play Streets of Rage or Mike Tyson Boxing? Well, using the Wii Virtual Console now [well pretty soon] you can! NES, SNES, N64, Genesis, even Turbo Graffix 16 games will be on deck for your game-time enjoyment. Why is this a big deal? Well the NES games will be $5 bucks a piece, SNES games will be $8 a piece, and N64 games should run you about $10 a piece...all to be downloaded to your Wii...at which point you will own them for as long as you like. Altered Beast, Castlevania, Shinobi, Double Dragon, and the original Zelda game all available on the same console as Super Mario Galaxy and Spore. Dig it!

    Reason No.2: Red Steel - The Game That Sold Me on the Console
    During E3 I had my doubts about the Wii like most gamers that is, or was, until I saw the demo for the game Red Steel. As I watched the player title the Wiimote and the player characters hand mimicking the same movement [which resulted in the player character tilting their hand holding a gun to the side a la gang-banger] and I was sold. This implementation of motion sensor will allow me to be more accurate in first person shooter games and actually make them fun for me to play. I could go on and on about how good the game looks, or talk about how the swordplay works with the Wiimote and why that alone should make you want to play this game, but I won't. Go to the GameTrailers Red Steel and watch the videos yourself. Ubi Soft...you rock!

    - and finally, to complete my Wii-Fangurl-dom -

    Reason No.1: Dude, it's Only $250!
    Seriously, that's cheap! I won't have to donate plasma, or my precious eggs for other people to make babies with in order to buy it like I probably will for the PS3. [Ok, I'm not going to donate eggs to get money together for the PS3, but I have thought about the plasma donation.] I've seen people talk about how "affordable" the PS3 is and it's just not the case. Their argument is if you make more than 500 bucks a week you should have it made, and this might be the case if you still lived at home with your parents, didn't pay room and board, didn't pay for insurance, and never went out to eat, on dates, or had a car. Sure, if you meet those criteria you have no excuse to not buy a PS3. I live in Virginia. I pay monthly rent on an apartment, I buy food to cook [mostly organic, which ain't cheap], pay for cable and high speed internet, insurance, cell phones, transportation, and actually do go out to do "date like" activities. Scrounging together $250 is a lot easier than $600...which won't even get me a game, or the proper high definition cables to connect my pricey lil PS3 buddy to my TV. While I'm sure the PS3 will be a great little console, it will probably be a bit before I can get my dollahs together to buy one, the right cables, and a game.

    Until then, I'll be making Wiiople on my Wii.

    Thus ends my Wiijoicing. Catch the repost tomorrow with all 10 reasons listed together. Can't wait that long? Well then, read reasons 10 thru 8 here and reasons 7 thru 4 here.
