The 21st Century Equivalent of a Tin Can and String

    posted @ 1/10/2010 02:22:00 AM by evermore

It's not the sound of the ocean that this woman is listening to at CES -- no, it's her iPod! The ice bucket she is holding is one she borrowed from her Las Vegas hotel room. That little thing stuck on the end is the Rock-It, a device that creates vibrations to amplify the sound from an MP3 player so that almost any such object can be used as a makeshift amplifier.

She and another woman demonstrated the device at the OrigAudio booth, sticking the business-end of the Rock-It to plastic water bottles and cardboard boxes, demonstrating the ability to pump up the volume of their little music player.

At that point, I saw the opportunity to take a funny photo, with her holding up the bucket to her ear like a tin can on a string, and she gladly complied. That's the fun thing about being a photojournalist -- you can get almost anybody to do almost anything you want them to do.

But now that I think about it, I feel a little bad. She was friendly and helpful, and I took advantage of her like that.

But look at it like this -- if I hadn't seen a funny photo opportunity, I wouldn't have taken the picture. And I wouldn't have posted it to this website. And you wouldn't have read about this otherwise useful product. So perhaps I'm doing them a little good. In fact, I urge you to check out the Rock-It at the OrigAudio website. If you decide to buy, enter the promo code Plugtouchrock to get 20 percent off your order.

Now I don't feel so bad.

How Much Is That Singing Doggie In the Window?

    posted @ 1/08/2010 02:15:00 AM by evermore
Although Ninjasistah has nightmares of Teddy Ruxpin when she sees something like this, I couldn't resist taking a picture of this animatronic dog singing along with an iPod Nano at the CES convention Wednesday afternoon.

Of course, once Miley Cyrus started singing "Party in the U.S.A.," the dog stopped singing, glared at me and walked indignantly from the room.

Square Enix has officially announced their new rpg...for the iPod!? Song Summoner: The Unsung Heroes has gameplay and graphics in the style of the Final Fantasy Tactics series and Disgaea.

Are you ready for the kicker? You remember the Monster Rancher game on the Playstation 1 and how you were able to create monsters from just about any CD you had around the house? Well, Song Summoner follows a similar path, allowing you to create an army from songs on your iPod. Here are some pics.

    SONG SUMMONER: The Unsung Heroes
    Publisher: Square Enix, Inc.
Platform: iPod nano with video, iPod classic and fifth generation iPod
    Genre: Role-Playing
    Launch Date: July 8, 2008
Price: 4.99 USD (iTunes Store download)

    Game Features

    - Transform your iPod songs into "Tune Troopers" to combat the evil Mechanical Militia.

    - Tune Trooper types and abilities are determined by the songs used to create them.

    - Your Tune Troopers can be powered up even outside of the game--just by listening to the songs you used to create them!

    - Control Ziggy, a "Conductor" that creates warriors out of music, and guide him through his journey to save his brother Zero from the Mechanical Militia.

    - Experience a turn-based tactics battle system, divided into player and enemy phases where each side takes turns maneuvering their forces.

    - Deploy the right troopers at the right time, and use contraptions found on the map effectively to achieve victory in battle!

    - iPod Click Wheelallows players to play the game as easily as selecting music.

Podcasts are becoming much more popular with every passing day. I listen to tons of them throughout the week. They’ve become the main source for much of my gaming, anime, and tech info. I’d like to know which podcasts you guys can’t get through the week without.

I first discovered podcast almost two years ago and I’ve been hooked ever since. I can’t start my day if I don’t have all of my podcast updated and ready to put on my iPhone. My playlist consisted of only about five shows in the beginning, but now I’m up to almost fifty shows. There’s a variety of shows that I listen to. They consist of music podcasts, video games, anime, technology, etc. The list goes on and on. The funny part is, with all the shows that I have on queue, I’m still looking for more. That’s where you guys come in.

I’d like to know what podcasts you guys are listening to and watching. List your top 10 or 5 if you don’t have that many. Maybe there’s an awesome podcast that I should be checking out. Hook me up guys. Here’s mine:

    1. Achievement Junkie
    2. Diggnation
    3. Distorted View
    4. Electric Sista Hood
    5. GeekBrief.TV
    6. The Instance: World of Warcraft Podcast
    7. Massively Online Gamer
    8. Radio 538: Tiesto’s Club Life
    9. Tekzilla
    10. Totally Rad Show

That’s ONLY a few on my list. What are you guys bumpin’ on your mp3 player?

    Gadgets You Just Don't Need

    posted @ 1/18/2008 12:03:00 AM by evermore
NinjaSistah always comes back from CES with tschotkes of dubious need. One of the favorite giveaways these days is the now-ubiquitous thumb drive, which are about as useful as floppy disks.

Truth is, most of the stuff that was shown off at CES are as worthless as the credit-card sized thumb drive she brought back. Sure, it looks all cool and thin, but you've got to clear so much space off your desk to use it that it's simply not worth the trouble.

There are a lot of other worthless things that were shown at CES. Here are some of the stuff you should just avoid:

Razer Destructor Gaming Mouse Pad: I don't mean to pick on Razer specifically, but the mouse pad is a whole class of products that you should completely avoid. Back when the computer mouse first became popular -- on the original circa 1984 Macintosh -- mouse pads were necessary if your desk had a slick surface. The little roller ball on the bottom would slip and slide, making mousing around difficult. But those roller ball mouse controllers are all gone now. The optical sensor of the new units don't need traction. They have difficulty only on a mirrored surface. So throw those mouse pads overboard -- they're just a waste of money.

Adesso WKB-3000UB Trackball Keyboard: A computer keyboard with a trackball! How 1991! Who in his right mind would want to go back to that decrepit technology? I had a trackball in an ancient Powerbook that needed constant cleaning. Once trackpads came out, I never looked back. And the newest trackpads from Apple have multi-touch technology. The only thing trackballs were good for was Millipede and Missle Command.

Mustek Wireless 15-Inch Digital Photo Frame: It's got Bluetooth and it plays MP3s and it's wireless and it's just stupid. You can get a nice, old picture frame at a garage sale for about 50 cents. You can print a nice, large image on an inkjet printer. And if you gotta have music, just unearth one of the old iPods you have hanging around the house and hide it with a tiny speaker behind the frame. You'll save a whole bunch of money.

Nyko Wireless Nunchuk: I like Nyko as a company, but to me this is a worthless product. Since I'm using both the Wii controller and nunchuk at the same time, they're never more than an arm's length away from each other. A wireless nunchuk requires that it contain batteries as well, something the wired nunchuk doesn't have. It's gotta be heavier, and it's gotta make your arms wearier faster.

XIAS USB Pen Drive: Don't let them fool you -- it's not a pen. It doesn't look like a pen. It doesn't contain ink, gel, charcoal or graphite. You can't use it to draw anything. Oh, sure, it's a USB drive. But if you're looking for a pen, don't fall for their lies. You can't ever use it as a pen.

    iPHONE PRICE DROP ALREADY!

    posted @ 9/06/2007 12:15:00 AM by Douceswild

We all knew it was going to happen, but not even I suspected it would be this soon. A price drop on the iPhone was inevitable but why so soon after its release a mere two months ago?

Steve Jobs had plenty to announce at Apple'€™s September 5th 2007 Special Event, but the announcement that sent people running to their nearest AT&T and Apple store was the $200 price drop on the iPhone.  The 4gig will now sell for $299 and the 8gig is priced at $399. AT&T announced the price drop to employees this afternoon as effective immediately.

This huge price cut has people asking "WTF?". At the top of the list of puzzled people are those who stood in line for hours and even days to get the phone at its extravagant release price of $499 and $599. Some say it'€™s because the iPhone sales have slacked since release. Others say it'€™s because Apple has something else up their sleeves. If you ask me, I'€™d say it's a bit of both. It'€™s a fact that iPhone sales have slowed considerably but with the holidays approaching, sales might have picked up a bit. If I was a betting man, then my money would go towards the price drop being due to the other products that were also announced at the event, such as the new iPod Nano and iPod Touch

Whatever the reason is, now is an excellent time to pick one up if you haven'€™t already. If I were you, I'€™d move quickly, especially if you were hoping for the 4gig, because AT&T also tagged that particular model as "€œwhile supplies lasts"€. They will no longer be carrying the 4gig, which to me, was pointless anyway seeing as how $100 more gets you double the memory.

UMG Cuts Off Nose, Face Feels Spited

    posted @ 7/09/2007 12:40:00 PM by evermore
What are the three most important things in retail sales? Location, location, location. That is, unless you're Universal Music Group.

UMG announced this week that some artists it currently promotes will be denied availability on iTunes. Supposedly, this is to punish Apple for making iTunes the overwhelming No. 1 way to buy music online.

So who will it be, Universal? Will you ban the Black Eyed Peas from iTunes? I saw Diana Krall perform in Vegas last month. Will her records be stricken from the iTunes library? Or how about the Pussycat Dolls? Maybe you should forget about putting those girls on your iPod.

Will George Strait find himself straight out of the iTunes library? Or Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and Eminem? Could be Eve or Gwen Stefani or Melissa Etheridge or Mariah Carey or Sheryl Crow or Shania Twain or Reba McEntire? I'd suggest Universal refrain from keeping Reba off of iTunes. She's from a rodeo family. She could beat them up.

I saw Erykah Badu in 2004 at Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. Surely they wouldn't strike her from iTunes. Or bands like blink-182, Bon Jovi, Fall Out Boy, Godsmack, Hoobastank, The Killers, 3 Doors Down and Weezer. No iPod access for you while you're available only in Windows format.

Ashlee Simpson! She's a UMG act! Please say it's Ashlee Simpson that you're keeping out of iTunes!

But as for Stevie Wonder, Sting, Elton John, The Cardigans and Wolfmother, UMG could seriously damage their careers by keeping them out of an iPhone.

UMG might as well go and tell Best Buy to shove it. Or maybe they should start making music discs that are playable only in a Sony PSP.

That angry noise you hear in the background is UMG's face as the company takes a knife to its own nose.

There is was, staring me in the face this morning. It was all over the internet. I'm sure you saw it, too. The Spice Girls will be announcing their "future plans". Next week. Thursday, June 28, to be exact.

Of course, the other news is that the iPhone will be released next week as well. Friday, June 29.

A Spice Girls reunion and the iPhone release in the same 24-hour period. Could this just be... coincidence?

I think not. We at ElectricSistaHood, in a Top Secret communique, are releasing a fragment of lyrics from the Spice Girls' next sure-to-be top-selling hit, tentatively called, "Wanna-iPhone":

I'll tell you what I want, what I really really want,
So tell me what you want, what you really really want,
Want iPhone, want iPhone, want iPhone, want iPhone, want iPhone
    Really really really want iPhone.

If you wanna be my iPod, you also gotta be my phone,
Make it last forever. Phoneship never ends.

Is This the Next Great Mobile Gaming Device?

    posted @ 1/09/2007 11:44:00 PM by evermore
What would you think of a mobile gaming device with these specifications? It's only 0.46 inches thick. It has a speaker, a microphone and a camera. Held horizontally, its screen is 480 pixels wide, just like the PlayStation Portable, and 320 pixels tall, nearly 50 pixels taller than the PSP's 272 pixels. At 160 pixels per inch, its screen is the most dense of any standalone portable gaming device. It's got up to 8 GIGABYTES of RAM (compared to the PSP's 32 MEGABYTES). It's got touchscreen controls. It has 802.11 b and g Wi-Fi capabilities (PSP has only b) and Bluetooth built in.

Oh yeah, it's also a mobile phone, an internet browser and an iPod.

The iPhone, announced earlier today during Apple's MacWorld keynote speech, is a whole lotta things. Most people are going to buy it because it's an amazing mobile phone combined with an iPod. But there are a lot of reasons why it could become a force among gamers.

First of all, its mere specifications make it better than any standalone mobile gaming system. Although the screen is not physically as large as the PSP (the iPhone's screen is only 3.5 inches, compared to 4.3 inches for the PSP), it meets the PSP in pixel width and exceeds the PSP in pixel height -- the PSP's pixels are simply larger and, as a result, coarser.

The iPhone is half as thin (0.46 inches vs. the PSP's 0.9 inches) and half as heavy (135 grams vs. the PSP's 280 grams). Held horizontally, it is a third less in width (4.5 inches vs. PSP's 6.7 inches) and a half-inch less in height (2.4 inches vs. PSP's 2.9 inches).

There's just one problem: no games.

The gaming market for the Macintosh dried up when the computer's 10th operating system OS X arrived in 2000. But the iPhone is exactly the catalyst that could turn things around for gaming on the Mac.

The iPhone shows great potential in this area. It has Google Maps and the Opera browser built in. It has "push" email, provided by Yahoo, which gives it email capabilities similar to that on a Blackberry. It is able to run Apple's Dashboard widgets, which should at least allow for simple games when it is available in June. Everything else is a big question mark: How much RAM is there? What is the graphics card? Is there stereo Bluetooth support? Will third-party Dashboard widgets work? Is there going to be a Software Development Kit to allow high-end game makers access to the device?

Perhaps few people will even care. With the Nintendo DS and PSP slugging it out on the high end and LG, Samsung, Nokia and other cellphone makers battling each other in that arena, maybe no one will take a second look at gaming on an iPhone.

But the sheer combination of all those different technologies sure is intriguing, isn't it?

    Soul Calibur 3

    posted @ 12/04/2006 07:42:00 PM by geekwoman
Soul Calibur 3 Review by Geek Woman

Soul Calibur 3 is a fighting game that is an exclusive on the PS2. That was a big disappointment for many people. On the whole it is a truly great fighter. There are some problems with it, as there are with any game. It is a quality offering considering that we are in the twilight days of the reign of the PS2.

Games that are vast and that have achieved a level of praise from gamers on previous installments, have a rough time of it when something like a third sequel is finally rolled out. That can go several ways. The game could just be terrible for many reasons. Sometimes a sequel isn't finished, and it doesn't have the depth that early versions of game had when the developers were trying to curry favor. This is not the case with SC3. It is almost too vast this time. It falls into that trap of trying to be the "everything for everybody" game. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, because it means they are trying to give you more stuff for your money. The good intentions don't always translate well. The addition of a real time strategy (RTS) game into the mix largely failed.

Not all game play modes are available from the start of the game. Many of the characters move lists have been changed which apparently has p'oed the hardcore fans to no end. Why would the developers of a much loved franchise do something like switch up the moves? It would seem that since the game is exclusively for PS2, that it was directed mainly at an existing fan base. Why mess with them?

OK counter to most reviews that you read which tell you the good stuff first, we've gotten the only two bad points about this game out of the way. First of all there is tons of content. Some of it is lousy granted, but still you won't run out of things to do. There are several new characters. Three of them are introduced right off. Access to the other new characters is gradual. There is new game-play, and the new modes too. If you have played Soul Calibur before you won't really be disappointed. If you haven't played any Soul Calibur games yet, get it or rent it.

Soul Calibur 3 has some of the most fun and interesting female characters in gaming today. Each one has a complete move-list. They have a selection of weapons that upgrade. You can buy more weapons, and armor. There are several costumes for each avatar.

Best of all is the character creation feature. You can design an avatar that suits you perfectly. There are endless combinations of clothing, armor and accessories. You chose a profession, appearance and even the voice of your character. That seems to be the most fair way to settle the issue with nudity in avatars. If you want to wear "barbarian underwear" to fight in - you can. If you want to cover up - you can. There are hoods and headscarves, your character could be clothed from head to toe and layers of armor can be piled on. The character creation capability gives a range of options that not only enhance the looks of your character, but it adds a new component to the game. You get to create your own ultimate fighter.

    Game-play
There are about 18 different modes in the game. If you want to be hardcore and get all the unlockables, you would have to beat all of the modes to get absolutely everything. There are many surprising features in this game. Bottom line is it is the best 2 person fighting game out there. Still in all, you can win with button mashing. It's a fighter plain and simple, in spite of all the fancy window dressing. The AI is pretty predictable which can be good or bad depending on how you like to play. They seem to try to push your character into a wall or a corner. If you like a big challenge it is there. If you like to take it easy and see the whole game, you can do that too. Like many games, I can analyze what the game "punishes" you for. If you don't get the opening move right, it is likely that you will loose. If you turn your back to your enemy, or if your attacks fall short you loose. The timid are not rewarded in gaming.

There are around 30 characters to play with in the game as well as a strange random character generator which is fun. Two of the new characters are female. Tira, is a girl fighter who uses a razor sharp hoola hoop as a weapon. Setsuka is a Japanese geisha with a parasol and a sword. Someone must be hearing us. The fighting engine was revamped and improved. The weird Chronicles of the Sword mode enables you to take your new custom players onto a map, where you need to occupy enemy forts by beating them in battles. That was done better in SC2. The Arcade mode is called "Quick Play". The Tournament mode puts you in fictional competition. What is that about? There is no online play for this game which is a terrible shame. I have to say that SC3 beat the pants of Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks - which I was looking forward to more, but MK Deception has online mulitiplayer.

    Graphics
The environments in this game are stunning. There are gorgeous landscapes. Marvelous temples, over flowing water falls and Ivy's over decorated mansion. The camera pans quickly over pink hued clouds in the background, water effects shimmer with some of best eye candy you can see. For a fighting game SC3 has the best looks going. And I am including DOA when I say it is the best looking fighter out there. There is no lack of colors. It is bright, bold and conspicuous.

    Sound
The sound is a disappointment. There could have been better music for this game. I would have saved the space on the disk that was wasted on the RTS mode for better music. The voice acting is still very poor, and amusing because of it. The voices and the sound effects have not changed or been upgraded. While other games are integrating song lists and even iPod interfaces into games, SC3's lack there of is a letdown. I guess the developers missed the bit that Morgan Webb did on Xplay where they dubbed the weird grunts and groans from SC2 into suggestive parody skits.

Despite the superfluous extra features the game still is the top of the line fighter for PS2 beating out Tekken 4 with style. Soul Calibur 3 has a lot to offer girl games that like to kick butt. They built this one for us. (Yeah, I know they built it for guys that like to play with sexy female avatars.) I give Soul Calibur 3 a 4.5

    We's Going To CES!

    posted @ 12/03/2006 11:43:00 AM by Ninjasistah
We finally got some cash together and figured we ought to hit a big convention/tradeshow and CES was the obvious choice. CES is the Consumer Electronic Showcase, basically anything and everything electronic that companies could possibly want to sell to you [the consumer] make their debut here. CES has been going strong and growing strong since 1967, so to say that we are excited to become part of this rich tech history would be a slight understatement.

Now you might be saying to yourself, "Why is the ESH crew going to CES? Isn't it just a bunch of TV's on display?" It's a valid question to ask, but it ain't accurate. CES is actually the show that COMDEX and even the former incarnation of E3 were modeled after, and while there will be a lot of new TV technologies introduced at the show there will also be lots of home theater setups, sounds systems and components, wireless technologies, and even video game related items that will surface from the show. I think as gamers sometimes we forget that getting our hands on the latest and greatest game stuff isn't limited to just a console, or piece of software.

No matter who you are you have a gaming rig that you use, be it just a 23" TV or an elaborate setup containing a 7.1 surround sound system, 42" flat screen LCD TV, a chain of UPS', several gaming consoles, a harmony remote, and a theater style seating arrangement. [Huge sigh] With that said, one of the things that you will start seeing around ESH will be our takes on different components that you may or may not want to add to your rig, so it only makes sense to us that we start by going to CES. We are going to be looking at different audio setups, home theater systems, peripherals for both computer based and console based gaming, LCD TV's [this will come in handy for those of you wanting to upgrade that tiny little 25" TV to something a little sexier] mobile gaming, and gaming in general. And we can't forget portable media stuff, mostly because they won't let us. We'll be on the look out for the hottest new gadgets at the show that will help you get the most out of your iPod, portable video player... hell we'll even take a look at stuff for the Zune while we're at it. We are committed to covering your electronic needs, but only in the good way.

While CES is not E3, Microsoft and Sony are going to be there, and there is going to be a separate "video gaming" section on the tradeshow floor, so we aren't going to be forgetting our roots any time too soon. It just seems to us like it's time to take that next step forward in covering the whole spectrum of gaming life, that I think sometimes gets overlooked. You can't use a game console without having a TV to hook it up to. You can't hear the games without some kind of sound system hooked up to [or built into] that TV your connected to, and you have to have some place to park your ass in order to play and enjoy those games you are playing... and in January, NinJaSistah and Evermore are going to bring you some first hand accounts of the new toys you'll want to add to your rig from CES.

This will be one time that what happens in Vegas, doesn't stay there!

    Feed Your iPod

Ok, here's another installment of the stuff for your iPod. I picked this album up this week simply to get the first track: "White & Nerdy."

Just in case you need a hint, this is the lead track off of Weird Al Yankovic's new album Straight Outta Lynwood

Now, I'm a big Yanker... er Yankovic fan. I thought Amish Paradise was a stroke of pure parody genius personally. The reason that this album is something I'm trying to pimp is because the Chamillionaire parody White & Nerdy, Usher parody Confessions pt.3 and the 10 minute long R.Kelly parody Trapped in the Drivethrough are worth purchasing... not just listening, purchasing. But you only get Trapped in the Drivethrough if you buy the album.

"Weird Al" Yankovic - Straight Outta Lynwood
Click the album art to be taken to the album page in your iTunes app and sample the songs... then BUY THE ALBUM.

    That is all.

    Fill in the Blank

    posted @ 10/25/2006 11:20:00 PM by evermore
I've seen this too many times: well-meaning advice columnists talking about things they have no knowledge about, so when it comes time to give advice, they tell everyone to fear the thing they don't understand.

I was reminded of this by such an advice columnist named Marguerite Kelly, who writes for the Washington Post and is syndicated throughout the U.S. On Oct. 20, a reader asked about the advisability of giving her 8-year-old daughter a Nintendo DS for Christmas. Kelly, naturally, was appalled, immediately warning the reader of the possibility (Possibility? You must mean certainty!) of gaming addiction.

Although you can read the whole thing here, I will also reproduce the answer portion of the letter below. But instead of referring to video games, I'm going to let you choose which dangerous thing the daughter ought to be protected from. Just choose from a list of real (and imagined) dangers for yourself:

You're wise to hesitate. , like television and the computer, can create dissension at home and even get a child addicted to them -- if you let them.

Just as children know exactly how many times a parent will nag before she blows up, so does your daughter know how many times she has to beg for something before you give in.

Give your daughter only if you can afford it, if you can set reasonable limits and stick to them, and if you're willing to if she tries to negotiate for more time whenever she . You can always let her check out , like a book from the library.

Since too much is bad for anyone, especially a child, your daughter shouldn't be allowed to , nor should an 8-year-old be at for more than two or three hours a week or for more than two hours a week. This will give your daughter time to read, do her chores and her homework and play with her friends and her little sister.

The key, as usual, is moderation. Too many will make the family room look like but you needn't outlaw all of them. Many have no violence, sex or profanity and some require players to strategize more than Monopoly does, though not as much as chess. Insist, though, that your child teach you, her dad and her little sister how to and that she let you have occasional turns, too, so she won't get isolated from the family.

It's as important for parents to with their children as it is for them to read their children's books or go to their PTA meetings. You don't have to read every book or go to every meeting, but the more involved you are in your daughter's activities, the better you will know her interests, her abilities and her friends.

It's also important that she be as well as .

It's fine that she tells you what she wants for Christmas, but she should also be figuring out what she has to buy or make for family and friends. She will only do that, though, if you remind her frequently and if you take her to to find for Dad and Uncle Bob, to pick up the she needs to make for her grandma and buy fake to decorate she's giving to Aunt Tilly. These kinds of gifts will teach generosity and empathy to both of your girls, which is absolutely necessary. If they don't learn these virtues at home, they may never learn them at all.

Before you decide whether to give your daughter , make sure she plays with a few more times, since some children get bored with rather quickly. If she still wants one, expect to pay . Choose the ; it's supposed to be simpler, lighter and better.

Whether you give your daughter for Christmas or not, she should love and

Daily News: Microsoft to Apple: Get Zuned

    posted @ 10/19/2006 11:20:00 PM by evermore
    In today's news:
    • Microsoft tells Apple to Zune itself
    • A feature no one asked for
    • Wii and PS3 kiosks heading to stores
    • The week's best quotes
    • One of those anime things

    READ MY LIPS:
When General Motors tried to sell the Chevy Nova in Mexico during the 1960s, they discovered an unfortunate problem. In Spanish, the word "nova" means "no-go." Well, the brainiacs at Microsoft didn't seem to care to check out the name of their new MP3 player against the world's major languages. When told the meaning of the word pronounced Zee-yoon in Hebrew, the conversation with Bill Gates undoubtedly went something like this:

Microserf: Uh, Mr. Gates, there's a problem with the new Zune.
Bill Gates: A problem? Is it that damn brown color?
Microserf: No, it's not that, sir. It's... it's... it's the name.
Bill Gates: The name? What's wrong with the name?
Microserf: Well, uh, in Hebrew it means... it means...
Bill Gates: Spit it out, boy. It couldn't be that bad.
    Microserf: It means FUCK!
    Bill Gates: FUCK? Fuuuuuuuuuuuuck.

HERE'S A FEATURE NOBODY ASKED FOR
Last week, Sony introduced a new Walkman MP3 player to compete with Apple's iPod. The big, new, iPod-killing feature of this one? The ability to upload music directly from a compact-disc player. Think about this for a moment: Most CD players run at 1X speed, meaning a 45-minute-long CD will take exactly 45 minutes to upload the songs to the player. If you let the batteries run dry, you'll have to upload the whole thing again.

And, as NinjaSistah asked when I told her about it, who owns CD's anymore?

    RUMORS:
Sony's not worried about the PS3 overheating, right? Then why are they installing an extra cooling fan in their store kiosks? Read about it here.

Speaking of kiosks, Wii and PS3 kiosks are already winging their way to Best Buy, Wal-Mart, GameStop and EBGames stores. Call your favorite store to see if it has already arrived. More...

Don't play the Wii in direct sunlight. That's the word of a blogger on the Nintendo Gal website: "That's right, if you have the sun beaming right onto the sensor bar, it doesn't work." More...

    QUOTES:
"For this Christmas I think the price for what it specifically does as a video games machine [it] is a bit pricey..."
-- Sony Computer Entertainment Australia Managing Director Michael Ephraim, talking about the Wii's price. From Australia's Age newspaper.

"E3 is not a place where product is sold anymore. The industry is recognized as a big part of mainstream culture, so the need for a big glittering event to validate the industry is not what it used to be," he said. "What is needed ... is to focus on the fact that E3 is much more about media-related opportunities. The question is what is the most efficient way to create those opportunities."
-- Douglas Lowenstein, president of the Entertainment Software Association, the trade association that owns E3.From SFGate.com

"When building a house, traditional Japanese builders start with the tiniest detail and gradually expand from there. Western builders are the opposite. They start with the picture of a whole and add details to it. When Westerners look at old Japanese buildings, they often wonder how the builders drew the blueprint for such a complex shape. But the secret is that there never was a blueprint. It is this fundamental difference in approach that makes Japanese buildings fascinating to their eyes. The same thing can be said about animation. The way we create large images for movies is similar to that traditional architectural method. I think that explains the appeal Japanese animation can have, particularly in the western world."
-- Toshio Suzuki, president of Japan's Studio Ghibli. From the Wall Street Journal

Naruto, Vol. 5 - Shinobi Weapons: As I was saying yesterday, join three young ninjas -- Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha and Sakura Haruno -- as they continue their training. Sort of like Pokemon without all the dang cards, eh? Get the thing here.

    Entertainment For Your iPod

    posted @ 10/19/2006 05:20:00 PM by Ninjasistah
I know we talked about these TV show episodes a couple of weeks ago, but it just now dawned on me that I could link to your buying them through the iTunes store on this here website, so here goes.

First up is the South Park World of Warcraft episode. Why should you buy the episode? Well, even if you aren't a fan of Warcraft, you can appreciate the jokes the SP guys make about how life consuming the game is. I know, I've lost a member of my family to Warcraft. Rehab only works if you let it people.
South Park - South Park, Season 10B - Make Love, Not WarcraftSo click on the image to be taken to the episode in your iTunes and buy it! It's like, less than two dollah!

The Office - The Office, Season 3 - The Coup
Next, for your entertainment pleasure I bring you "The Coup" the episode of NBC's series The Office in which Call of Duty makes a huge appearance. While I suck at Call of Duty I LOVE The Office so do yourself [and myself] a favor and pick this episode up, fall in love with The Office, then, thank me.

Here It Goes AgainThen we have, I think, one of my all time favorite music videos. I have loved OK GO for a while now. I actually heard about them shortly after they broke loose unto the unsuspecting music scene, and the fact that they make the music they want, with the music videos they want to boot is just awesome.

AFI - DECEMBERUNDERGROUNDAnd finally, I just got turned on to this band, and I have to say I'm addicted. As soon as I heard the music, I searched out their band on Myspace and requested an add because, well, I dig them that much. AFI is rock passion. I don't know what else I can say about them. Their music just hits me and I can't turn away or not pay close attention.

Alright, that should be enough to add to your iTunes collection and slap on your iPod for fun. Maybe I'll do one of these a week... call it FRESHpicks or something? Suggest some stuff for your iPod that I have/enjoy/covet my own damn self.

    ESH is Goin' Mobile

First ElectricSistaHood was in your computer. Then ESH was in your iPod. Now the Sistahs are sneakin' into your phone.

If you've got the ability to surf the internet with your cell phone, you'll soon be able to start reading the latest blog entries by the Sistahs on the same phone.

ElectricSistaHood is now available on internet-ready phones at the URL: esh.mobi

We kept it nice and short for you. Nobody likes to have to hit those phone keys too much.

While the new site doesn't have much on it yet, we'll be adding new functionality in the coming weeks -- particularly the latest blog posts by the Sistahs. In the future we hope to be able to deliver the weekly podcast directly to your phone.

You can access the site only on internet-ready cell phones that don't have a graphical web browser. For example, if your phone has only the standard telephone pad, you can probably visit the esh.mobi site without any problems. If your phone has a full typewriter keyboard, you'll probably get transferred to the full ESH website.

In any case, this gives you yet another way to enjoy the Sistahs while you're in transit from one place to the next. We know you'll appreciate the company.

    Powered Down

The remnants of Hurricane Ernesto has caused the unthinkable! Poor NinJaSistah is sitting in the dark at ESH Central, just hours before the next scheduled podcast was to be recorded. As a result, the Sistahs will take a week off to recuperate, but expect a new podcast to roll your way on Monday, Sept. 11.

Don't cry for NinJaSistah too much, though. She's got two, fully charged laptop computers, a Treo 650 cell phone that can connect to the internet, an iPod Nano and a PlayStation Portable to keep herself entertained.

In addition, she can connect either laptop to the internet via Bluetooth and her Treo phone, so if you see her available in the Meebo box at the right, feel free to say hi. She'd love the company.

That is, until the batteries run out.
