I Couldn't Have Said It Better Myself

If you're anything like me, my spare time in these last few weeks has been spent in keeping up with the rumors surrounding Wednesday's announcement of new products by Apple. What is going to become the New Word of 2010? Will it be iSlate, iTablet, iPad, iOhWhatever?

I was going to write my own pre-announcement story about the iToBeNamedLater, but it has already been written for me -- and it's a gem:

Some personal thoughts about the Apple Tablet by Mel Martin for The Unofficial Apple Weblog says pretty much what I was going to write -- and it's written better than what I would have done.

FULL DISCLOSURE: My wife owns Apple stock, currently valued at the price of about 8,000 iTunes songs.

There are new additions to your regular old iTunes this morning. If you do a search, you'll find some of the new iPhone applications! Don't believe me? Then check out the AIM Application (iTunes Link).

Unfortunately, none of the the apps can be used until we get the 2.0 firmware update for iTunes, but it's still awesome to see them showing up. I'm almost positive that as the day progresses, we'll see more apps show up in iTunes.

Square Enix has officially announced their new rpg...for the iPod!? Song Summoner: The Unsung Heroes has gameplay and graphics in the style of the Final Fantasy Tactics series and Disgaea.

Are you ready for the kicker? You remember the Monster Rancher game on the Playstation 1 and how you were able to create monsters from just about any CD you had around the house? Well, Song Summoner follows a similar path, allowing you to create an army from songs on your iPod. Here are some pics.

    SONG SUMMONER: The Unsung Heroes
    Publisher: Square Enix, Inc.
Platform: iPod nano with video, iPod classic and fifth generation iPod
    Genre: Role-Playing
    Launch Date: July 8, 2008
Price: 4.99 USD (iTunes Store download)

    Game Features

    - Transform your iPod songs into "Tune Troopers" to combat the evil Mechanical Militia.

    - Tune Trooper types and abilities are determined by the songs used to create them.

    - Your Tune Troopers can be powered up even outside of the game--just by listening to the songs you used to create them!

    - Control Ziggy, a "Conductor" that creates warriors out of music, and guide him through his journey to save his brother Zero from the Mechanical Militia.

    - Experience a turn-based tactics battle system, divided into player and enemy phases where each side takes turns maneuvering their forces.

    - Deploy the right troopers at the right time, and use contraptions found on the map effectively to achieve victory in battle!

    - iPod Click Wheelallows players to play the game as easily as selecting music.

    What Are You Bumpin'?

Podcasts are becoming much more popular with every passing day. I listen to tons of them throughout the week. They’ve become the main source for much of my gaming, anime, and tech info. I’d like to know which podcasts you guys can’t get through the week without.

I first discovered podcast almost two years ago and I’ve been hooked ever since. I can’t start my day if I don’t have all of my podcast updated and ready to put on my iPhone. My playlist consisted of only about five shows in the beginning, but now I’m up to almost fifty shows. There’s a variety of shows that I listen to. They consist of music podcasts, video games, anime, technology, etc. The list goes on and on. The funny part is, with all the shows that I have on queue, I’m still looking for more. That’s where you guys come in.

I’d like to know what podcasts you guys are listening to and watching. List your top 10 or 5 if you don’t have that many. Maybe there’s an awesome podcast that I should be checking out. Hook me up guys. Here’s mine:

    1. Achievement Junkie
    2. Diggnation
    3. Distorted View
    4. Electric Sista Hood
    5. GeekBrief.TV
    6. The Instance: World of Warcraft Podcast
    7. Massively Online Gamer
    8. Radio 538: Tiesto’s Club Life
    9. Tekzilla
    10. Totally Rad Show

That’s ONLY a few on my list. What are you guys bumpin’ on your mp3 player?

iTunes now has the Guitar Hero video game soundtracks available for purchase. Want to prove that you have the metal? Well pedal your little buttocks over to the iTunes store and grab some of those few tracks that you don't already own in your massive music collection. Click on the image to go right to the GH3 page in the iTunes store.

Seriously. Originally, they only had just the WaveSound Studio three volume collection of recordings for the game... but now they have actually gathered up all of the tracks featured in all of the GHgames [including the 80's one] as performed by the original artist.

Gift cards and credit cards at the ready folks. GH3 is upon us all!

UMG Cuts Off Nose, Face Feels Spited

    posted @ 7/09/2007 12:40:00 PM by evermore
What are the three most important things in retail sales? Location, location, location. That is, unless you're Universal Music Group.

UMG announced this week that some artists it currently promotes will be denied availability on iTunes. Supposedly, this is to punish Apple for making iTunes the overwhelming No. 1 way to buy music online.

So who will it be, Universal? Will you ban the Black Eyed Peas from iTunes? I saw Diana Krall perform in Vegas last month. Will her records be stricken from the iTunes library? Or how about the Pussycat Dolls? Maybe you should forget about putting those girls on your iPod.

Will George Strait find himself straight out of the iTunes library? Or Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and Eminem? Could be Eve or Gwen Stefani or Melissa Etheridge or Mariah Carey or Sheryl Crow or Shania Twain or Reba McEntire? I'd suggest Universal refrain from keeping Reba off of iTunes. She's from a rodeo family. She could beat them up.

I saw Erykah Badu in 2004 at Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. Surely they wouldn't strike her from iTunes. Or bands like blink-182, Bon Jovi, Fall Out Boy, Godsmack, Hoobastank, The Killers, 3 Doors Down and Weezer. No iPod access for you while you're available only in Windows format.

Ashlee Simpson! She's a UMG act! Please say it's Ashlee Simpson that you're keeping out of iTunes!

But as for Stevie Wonder, Sting, Elton John, The Cardigans and Wolfmother, UMG could seriously damage their careers by keeping them out of an iPhone.

UMG might as well go and tell Best Buy to shove it. Or maybe they should start making music discs that are playable only in a Sony PSP.

That angry noise you hear in the background is UMG's face as the company takes a knife to its own nose.

    Anime Arrives at iTunes

    posted @ 2/19/2007 07:14:00 PM by evermore
Owners of the video iPod and the upcoming appleTV can now look forward to $1.99 anime episodes from FUNimation. Complete seasons from the series Desert Punk, Speed Grapher and Samurai 7 are now available.

FUNimation anime series available for immediate purchase and download on iTunes include:

Desert Punk: This series is a fresh take on traditional anime. It is a stark and darkly comedic series that employs strikingly realistic weaponry, alongside gritty and rough character design. Desert Punk shocks those who think they know what “anime” looks like! It is a bold new direction in both story and style.

Speed Grapher: Speed Grapher is a stylish near-future action series full of intensity, forbidden lust and conspiracy. Using a fast-moving, high stakes plotline, the series breaks new ground with its realistic, fashionable character design and acrobatic fight choreography. Speed Grapher creates an experience that is founded on great story and real-world trendsetter style, but is also laced with exactly the kind of cool tech and sci-fi elements that make anime so unique! This combination is geared specifically to attract fans outside of anime circles as well as satisfy the core anime audience.

Akira Kurosawa's "Samurai 7": At long last, an anime retelling of the legendary Akira Kurosawa epic, Seven Samurai. Akira Kurosawa has inspired generations of filmmakers and Samurai 7 is the anime retelling of legendary Kurosawa epic, Seven Samurai. Samurai 7 is set in a futuristic world that has just seen the end of a massive war. Many villages are being terrorized by Nobuseri bandits, but the Nobuseri are no normal bandits. They were once men, but during the war they modified themselves with machines to become living weapons and now appear as more machine than man. A group of villagers decide to hire samurai to protect their village. These men of valor are as skilled as they are unique.

    Daily News: An All-Wii Report

    posted @ 11/06/2006 12:06:00 AM by evermore
In today's news, we look at All Things Wii, with advice on how to get one on launch day, whether you'll need to bolster your health insurance to play the new controller, some Zelda pics, choice quotes from a Nintendo spokeschick and the lengths that a famous TV star will take to get one.

Need a Wii? Here's how to get it: If you missed out on the pre-orders, here are some great tips on how to get a Nintendo Wii on launch day.

Here's Best Buy's launch playbook: Planning on buying a PS3 or Wii from Best Buy? Then you'd better bone up on the company's launch weekend playbook. Kotaku provides all the details. Prefer shopping at Target? Here are their plans.

All about the Wii Startup Disc: Startup disc? That's right. You'll set up your Wii with an included startup disc. What will it do? The folks at Joystiq aren't sure, but there are certainly plenty of opinions.

The answer to the most important question of 2006: Will you get tired using the Wii controller? According to this story from someone who pounded hard at the Legend of Zelda for more than 10 hours, the answer is no.

Spoiling Zelda for you: Can't wait to see just how Zelda is going to look? Here's a site that reveals a bunch of screens from the Wii title.

Nintendo's questions and obfuscations: Game Informer magazine recently interviewed Perrin Kaplan, vice president of marketing and corporate affairs for Nintendo of America, about the Wii. According to Kaplan, several celebrities are already queueing up for the console, including Sean Combs and Uma Thurman. When asked about Nintendo's vantage point in the console war between Sony and Microsoft, Kaplan told Game Informer, "I think it could be the tortoise and the hare."

Will the Wii support custom soundtracks? This screenshot on the Darkzero site certainly suggests it.

Will Cartman get a Wii? The little South Park sparkplug was so anxious to get a Wii that he had himself frozen in last week's episode, with some unfortunate results. The conclusion can be seen this week, Wednesday at 10 p.m. Eastern time, and repeating at midnight Wednesday, 10 p.m. Thursday, 12:30 p.m. Saturday and 11 p.m. Sunday. If you missed last week's episode, you can search for it on YouTube or wait for it to show up on iTunes.

Ok, here's another installment of the stuff for your iPod. I picked this album up this week simply to get the first track: "White & Nerdy."

Just in case you need a hint, this is the lead track off of Weird Al Yankovic's new album Straight Outta Lynwood

Now, I'm a big Yanker... er Yankovic fan. I thought Amish Paradise was a stroke of pure parody genius personally. The reason that this album is something I'm trying to pimp is because the Chamillionaire parody White & Nerdy, Usher parody Confessions pt.3 and the 10 minute long R.Kelly parody Trapped in the Drivethrough are worth purchasing... not just listening, purchasing. But you only get Trapped in the Drivethrough if you buy the album.

"Weird Al" Yankovic - Straight Outta Lynwood
Click the album art to be taken to the album page in your iTunes app and sample the songs... then BUY THE ALBUM.

    That is all.

I know we talked about these TV show episodes a couple of weeks ago, but it just now dawned on me that I could link to your buying them through the iTunes store on this here website, so here goes.

First up is the South Park World of Warcraft episode. Why should you buy the episode? Well, even if you aren't a fan of Warcraft, you can appreciate the jokes the SP guys make about how life consuming the game is. I know, I've lost a member of my family to Warcraft. Rehab only works if you let it people.
South Park - South Park, Season 10B - Make Love, Not WarcraftSo click on the image to be taken to the episode in your iTunes and buy it! It's like, less than two dollah!

The Office - The Office, Season 3 - The Coup
Next, for your entertainment pleasure I bring you "The Coup" the episode of NBC's series The Office in which Call of Duty makes a huge appearance. While I suck at Call of Duty I LOVE The Office so do yourself [and myself] a favor and pick this episode up, fall in love with The Office, then, thank me.

Here It Goes AgainThen we have, I think, one of my all time favorite music videos. I have loved OK GO for a while now. I actually heard about them shortly after they broke loose unto the unsuspecting music scene, and the fact that they make the music they want, with the music videos they want to boot is just awesome.

AFI - DECEMBERUNDERGROUNDAnd finally, I just got turned on to this band, and I have to say I'm addicted. As soon as I heard the music, I searched out their band on Myspace and requested an add because, well, I dig them that much. AFI is rock passion. I don't know what else I can say about them. Their music just hits me and I can't turn away or not pay close attention.

Alright, that should be enough to add to your iTunes collection and slap on your iPod for fun. Maybe I'll do one of these a week... call it FRESHpicks or something? Suggest some stuff for your iPod that I have/enjoy/covet my own damn self.

In case you don't know what I'm talking about, a short while back I put up a post linking to an iTunes iMix that created mostly to see if the linking thing would work, and secondly I thought it might be cool to share some of the music stuff that I enjoy with you guys. I figure if I subject you to my opinions and speculations, the least I can do is reward you with some musical enjoyment. [And getting a cut of the sales if you buy anything... c'mon, you know you want to help me quit my day job ;)]

I love this mix because it's just what I need to get my adrenaline pumping! I recently got turned on to Imogen Heap and Brazilian Girls, so they made the cut for this mix obviously, but if you like a little trance, dance, pop, and rock this is a mix that you can't pass up. Some of the tracks featured in this mix include:
    Unfinished Sympathy by Massive Attack
    Koko by Goldfrapp
Work Me Goddamit by Armand Van Helden
Wanna Love You Girl by Robin Thicke
    Signs by Morpheus
    Daylight Robbery by Imogen Heap

I Need Some Fine Wine and You, You Need to Be Nicer by The Cardigans

    Download Your Anime Legally...

    posted @ 9/26/2006 08:44:00 PM by Ninjasistah
For a small fee that is. Today ADV Films launched their new anime download store called ADVuniverse

The website features episodes of various ADV license anime series for download. For a mere $4.99 American you can download episode one of Godannar or Jinki: Extended, or, um, Comic Party Revolution. Keep in mind that the store just launched so there are very few titles with episodes available. I'm sure that more titles and episodes will be added shortly. There are also a couple of movie titles available including Lady Death, but movie titles will cost you more topping out at about $19.99, which may have you asking, "is it worth it?"

My answer is a tad bit jaded. Why? Well for starters, the files are in WMV format with DRM protection. And before you go all crazy and accuse me of being a pirate [which I am not, I am clearly a Ninja... see my shurikens?] I only object to the DRM in this case because it renders the service useless on a Macintosh. Windows Media Player is only up to version 9 on the Mac, Microsoft has said they are no longer going to improve or add to the application, and neither WMP 9 on the Mac, VLC Media Player, nor MPlayer can play DRM protected WMV files. This sucks not only for myself, but true anime horders like Pandalicious. If I would have been able to buy and play ADV's catalog of content on my Mac I probably would buy a new external drive to devote just to it and I'm sure Panda would add a few drives to her existing arsenal of external storage.

I know that Apple recently added movie downloads to their iTunes Store, and I do feel that digital downloading is the future of film and animation distribution. Don't believe? Think of all the people that hit up places like YouTube and Viral Video, or how popular video podcasting has become... all those users can't be a fluke or fad. But I do think they have set their price point a bit too high and cut out too much of a potential consumer base to be very successful. Compare $1.99 per TV show episode through the Apple iTunes Store which you can purchase and view on either the Windows or Macintosh platforms to the $4.99 per anime series episode which you can must purchase and play on a Windows machine.

I guess time will tell. I could be wrong, people might be willing to pay $4.99 per episode for a half hour anime episode that is DRM protected to a Windows machine... but I know I won't be.

iconIt's happened to me more than once so I figured it was high time that I created my own playlists of music to game by. I've got a playlist for DOA sparring, a list for questing around in Fable and a few others. Since I've been having a fun making up my own soundtracks for games I figured I would take this opportunity to share one of my playlists with you. If you have iTunes and some cash burning a hole in your pocket click on the image at right to be taken to my iMix page in the iTunes application. [You must have iTunes installed on your machine already for this to work.]

I use the Apple iTunes application a lot [6,053 song files and counting] and one of the neat things you can do with the app is make up your own playlists that you then post to the iTunes Music store. These playlists are called iMixes and anyone with the iTunes app and an iTunes Store account can see these mixes and buy them.

The iMix I link to above one of my bumpin' thumpin mixes that I used when I'm practicing in DOA. The great thing about these mixes is that any [and every] member of the ESH can make them and will be posting them from time to time. The coolest ever part of the deal is that we make a lil money off of the stuff that you buy so start downloading people. Bandwidth doesn't pay for itself.

    Why Does MTV Suck?

    posted @ 9/09/2006 07:59:00 PM by Ninjasistah
Over the past 6 months I've been noticing something about my viewing habits that has been irking me of late; I'm avoiding the MTV channel like the plague.

I couldn't tell you the last time I actually went out of my way to go directly to the MTV channel on my TV. It was only by accident that I tuned in the MTV Video Music Awards show, and after watching it [shaking my head in disbelief most of the time] I really wished I hadn't wasted the time. I mean I LOVE Jack Black, but as host he didn't' bring the thunder that he kept promising he'd bring because the writing and timing for introductions and whatnot were all off or wrong. I felt so sad for Jack.

Shakira put on a great performance as did OK GO and The Raconteurs, but those were the only things in the evening worth watching as far as I was concerned. But I trudged on waiting for that "kick ass rock moment" that I knew was going to come that was going to make all the previous crap that I had to sit through worth while and that moment never came...which reminded me why I hadn't been watching MTV for the longest time.

To give you a reference point, the last time I habitually watched the Music Television channel Carson Daily was still a VJ and was engaged to a sweetheart of a girl named Tara, Norris' was a brunette, Loader still anchored the MTV News program [not just the news minute at the bottom of the hour], Matt Pinfield and Iann Robinson added fantastic rock band interviews to the line up of music videos that were running most of the day, and MTV was must watch TV. You would have to watch the Rap and Top Video count downs so you wouldn't be left out of the conversation all your friends were going to have the next day about the new video that premiered. The only TV show programming running on the channel were the Real World and that SayWhat?Karaoke show. [Any body remember the show "The State" that was on in the mid 90's? That show was the SHIT...moving on] This was back when it could still honestly be called MUSIC Television.

But then something happened and MTV changed. Over a very short period of time programming blocks started being filled with comedy show pilots rather than music videos with reckless abandon. In place of the block of rock videos where I would get introduced to bands I had never been exposed to before I was subjected to the likes of Tom Green [who I found to be neither funny nor entertaining] and Real World shows that were no longer reflections of what I thought [and was finding] the real real world to be like, and found myself starting to tune MTV out. For a while I rolled my attention over to the BET channel as I at least knew that at any given time that I tuned the channel in I was going to see a music video, [or a few commercials and then a bunch of music videos] and this was a help. But as with all things, that soon changed and shows like Video Soul and Caribbean Rhythms, and Video Vibrations were replaced by Girlfriends, Access Granted, and syndicated The Parkers.

Before long I wasn't watching music videos anymore because I couldn't find them to watch. If you turn on MTV during the day you are more likely to hit an episode of Pimp My Ride, Laguna Beach, My Super Sweet 16, or the dating game show NEXT than you are to see a music video or making of a music video. If you tune into BET you are slightly more likely to hit a music video but only between the 4pm and 7pm blocks of time and those music programs will have regular television programming in between them. Understanding that broadcasters have to adjust their programming blocks each season I get that MTV needed to evolve. In all honesty I was changing myself at the same time as I'm only a couple of years older than MTV myself, but it still hurt. I grew up with MTV...it was like a younger cousin that would come over the house to play every day after school. My addiction love of music now is founded in large part MTV.

Music is a big part of who I am and how I am to this day. As I write this article I have iTunes running with a playlist of songs that is about 4 hours long. I have a digital music library that is now over 6000 audio tracks and 120 video files in size, and grows a little each week. I have music playing when I play video games, when I'm cleaning the house, when I am designing websites, hell I even have music playing when I'm in the shower. I don't think I would be a happy and functional member of society if I didn't have music, and I know I'm not the only one. So I have a hard time understanding why MTV changed that part of themselves as they evolved, when that music loving part of me never changed during my evolution.

These days I really do avoid MTV like a STD. If I have the need for a music video I'll go directly to VH1 Soul, MTV2, MTV Jamz [as a TV channel last resort], or the iTunes music store to see if there are any videos that I want. Digital music services have really become my protection against being disappointed. Between iTunes, MySpace.com Music Streaming, and Last.FM [when it works on my Mac] I am protecting myself from the let down of tuning in to just to be turned off. But I guess MTV realizes this themselves since they've been making a shitload of changes company wide since the VMA aired and took a public flogging.

This Monday MTV Networks fired Tom Freston who has been at MTV since the very beginning. I doubt getting rid of Tom [who has been reported to be devastated by being fired and I can't say that I blame him] will fix or even make an impact on what is fundamentally wrong with MTV. It just seems like MTV isn't really "interested" in music anymore. The channel seems to be obsessed with wealth and all the trappings of the material life: from the Paris Hilton affliction to Cribs, Pimp My Ride, My Super Sweet 16, and the Iced Out New Years Bash, there isn't anything left in the budget to hype up a band like the Spooks or Little Brother.

You know, the network hasn't used the "I want my MTV" slogan in years and I think it's because even they have realized that no one would "demand it" in the state it's in right now.

I guess the music video network killed the video star. Anyone know what the statute of limitation on murder is?
